Sports for June 3rd
Chris McIntosh played for Barry Alvarez on two of Wisconsin’s Rose Bowl championship teams and spent the last few years working as his right-hand man. Now he’s about to succeed his former coach and boss as the Badgers’ athletic director. Chancellor Rebecca Blank announced Wednesday that McIntosh will take over when Alvarez finalizes his retirement in a matter of weeks. The 74-year-old Alvarez announced April 6 that he was stepping down.
As expected Aaron Rodgers was not in attendance at the Packers OTA practices on Wednesday. Also, receivers Davante Adams, Marquez Vandes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Equanimeous St. Brown and Devin Funchess, were absent too, just like last week. And while this week – like last week — is all voluntary, *next* week there are fines on the line if players skip the team’s mandatory minicamp.
Coach Matt LaFleur is hoping his star quarterback is there but not nothing new to share with reporters in that department.
“Yeah I’ve got nothing to update that situation,” LaFleur said. “You guys all know how we feel about it. I don’t know. We’ll see come Tuesday. It’s important that we have all our guys. We would love him to be here. Hopefully we will see him Tuesday.”
While Rodgers and many receivers were absent, All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari was there, running around with his teammates. And while Bakhtiari didn’t participate in the drills and team work coming off his ACL tear last December, Bakhtiari was running around a bit and giving pointers to teammates. His presence, inspiring optimism that he could possibly be ready for the season in September.
In other news and notes, the Packers have officially signed first round draft pick Eric Stokes, who had an excellent day in coverage at OTA’s. Also Wednesday, it was learned the team actually saved nearly 2 million dollars on tight end Robert Tonyan’s restricted free agent deal with some next-level money, tacking on void years to end of the 1-year deal, and treating most of the cash as a bonus. .
The Brewers are back in action tonight after an off-day on Wednesday. Milwaukee begins a four-game home series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs will start Jon Duplantier, who gave up four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in his season debut last Thursday against the Cardinals, against Brewers lefty Brett Anderson (2-3 4.13 ERA). First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
In games played on Wednesday in the NL Central the Cubs beat the Padres 6-1 and the Dodgers pounded the Cardinals 14-3. The Phillies at Reds game was postponed and the Pirates had the day off. The Brewers are in third place in the division, 1 ½ games behind the Cardinals and three games in back of the Cubs.
