Sports for June 28th

Khris Middleton scored 20 of his playoff career high-tying 38 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a 113-102 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday night for a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. Trae Young scored 35 points for Atlanta but was slowed in the final period after injuring his right ankle after stepping on an official’s foot late in the third. Middleton then scored 10 points in a 13-3 run in the fourth that gave Milwaukee the lead. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 11 rebounds for the Bucks, who trailed most of the game before surging in the fourth quarter. Atlanta led 95-88 before Middleton made his first of three 3-pointers during the 13-3 run for a 103-98 lead.

After never leading in a 125-91 Game 2 loss, the Hawks were eager for a better start in their first home game of the series. Turnovers by Middleton and Antetokounmpo led to dunks by Clint Capela, and Kevin Huerter added a 3-pointer for a 7-0 lead. The Hawks stretched the advantage to 13 points. Antetokounmpo was held to five first-quarter points but regained his scoring form in the second period. He had 11 points in the period as the Bucks finally pulled even at 56-all on a 3-pointer by Pat Connaughton with 12 seconds remaining in the half. The Bucks took their first lead at 82-80 on a basket by Bobby Portis Jr. with 1:47 remaining in the third. A 3-pointer by Danilo Gallinari gave Atlanta an 85-83 lead at the end of the period. Middleton opened the final period by sinking a 3 that signaled the start of his big period. He went on to outscore the Hawks, who had 17 points, by himself.

Game four is Tuesday night in Atlanta.

NBA Western Conference Semifinals (Mon.)

LA Clippers at Phoenix (Suns lead 3-1)

Keston Hiura homered, doubled and drove in three runs to back a sharp performance by Eric Lauer, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Sunday for their fifth consecutive victory. Lauer (2-3) struck out six over six innings of two-hit ball. After the Rockies loaded the bases with two outs in the second, Lauer retired 13 of his last 14 batters.  Omar Narváez also went deep as the NL Central-leading Brewers completed a three-game sweep and improved to 26-9 in day games, the best mark in the majors. All three games in this weekend series had afternoon starts. The Rockies have lost six of seven. They dropped to 6-31 away from Coors Field for the majors’ worst road record.

Hiura went 2 for 4 while showing signs of breaking out of a prolonged slump. He was robbed of a third hit on a diving catch by right fielder Yonathan Daza. After batting .303 with a .938 OPS in 84 games as a rookie in 2019, Hiura had an NL-high 85 strikeouts last year. He has struggled even more during a 2021 season that has included two stints in the minors. Before the Rockies came to town, Hiura was batting .127 with one homer and five RBIs in 38 games. He matched that RBI total in this three-game series while going 4 for 11 with two homers.  Hiura hit a solo homer and a game-winning sacrifice fly on Friday as the Brewers rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Rockies 5-4 in 11 innings. In the third inning Sunday, Hiura drove a 1-2 pitch from Chi Chi González (2-5) over the wall in left-center. Hiura’s homer traveled an estimated 423 feet.

The Brewers begin a home series with the Cubs tonight (Monday). Scheduled starters are RHP Freddy Peralta (7-2, 2.11 ERA) for the Brewers and RHP Kyle Hendricks (10-4, 3.84 ERA) for the Cubs. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Sunday the Braves shutout the Reds 4-0, , the Pirates beat the Cardinals 7-2 and last night the Dodgers downed the Cubs 7-2.  The Brewers lead the Cubs by 3 games in the division, the Reds are 6 back, the Cardinals 8 and the Pirates are 15 games behind.

NHL Stanley Cup Finals

Oshkosh West senior Sam Blaskowski stole the show, winning 3 events at the WIAA Division 1 State Track & Field meet on Saturday. Blaskowski won the 100 meter dash in 10.83, won the 200 in 22.22, and won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 5.75 inches. Ashwaubenon’s Luke Schroeder won the 300 hurdles, an event his father (former Packers WR Bill Schroeder) excelled at as well. Kaukauna distance runner Anna Fauske used a strong last lap to run away with the girls’ 1600 meter crown in 4:56.

Behind three first-place finishes from Sam Laskowski, Oshkosh West placed second in the team standings with 38 points. Arrowhead won with 66 and Kimberly, the two-time defending state champs were third at 30 points. Meanwhile, the Kaukauna girls team placed third in the team standings with 35. Muskego and D.C. Everest tied for first with 46 points.

Fond du Lac’s Sydney Arndt had the fastest sectional time in the 100 hurdles and the second-fastest time in the 300 hurdles, but the junior fell short of winning gold, but her performances were still real strong. Arndt placed second in 100 at 14.58 seconds, which was faster than her sectional time of 14.95. And in the 300 she placed third in a time of 46.42.

Ripon High School Junior Celina Lopez earned 2nd place in the WIAA State Division 2 Track & Field Championships on Friday in the Triple Jump ( 36 ft, 10.5 inches) and 4th place in the long jump (17 ft, 6.5 inches), which also tied the RHS school record.

Nelly Korda won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Sunday, finishing 3 strokes ahead of second-place Lizette Salas.  Korda  shot a final-round 26 to finish at 269.

On the men’s tour, it took 8 playoff holes but Harris English won the Travelers Championship over Kramer Hickok. Both finished regulation at 267. Mark Leishman finished third at 268.

After an intense, nail-biting battle over the last 29 laps at Pocono Raceway, Alex Bowman won Saturday’s Pocono Organics CBD 325 when his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson blew a left-front tire while leading within one corner of the finish line.  Bowman’s victory ended a streak of three straight wins for Larson, who passed Bowman’s No. 48 Chevrolet on Lap 127 of 130 and appeared destined to become the first driver since Jimmie Johnson in 2007 to win four straight NASCAR Cup Series races.

Jolene Anderson knocked down seven 3-pointers and finished with 25 points to lead six players in double figures as the Wisconsin GLO bounced back from its first loss with a 104-82 thumping of the St. Louis Surge on Sunday afternoon at Fontbonne University.

The seven 3-pointers were the most Anderson has made in a regular-season game with the GLO, while the 25 points matches her high game with the team. Wisconsin finished with 15 3-pointers as a team.  Allazia Blockton and Jessica Lindstrom each chipped in 16 points, while Taylor Wurtz added 13 and Kelly Moten and Jessica Kelliher each finished with 10.

Coming off the first loss in franchise history the day before, the GLO wasted no time in seizing control against the Surge on Sunday.
