Sports for June 21st

Daniel Vogelbach hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth and the Milwaukee Brewers rebounded from Colorado’s four-homer barrage in the sixth inning to beat the Rockies 7-6 on Sunday. The Rockies trailed 6-0 in the sixth before Yonathan Daza hit a two-run homer off Eric Lauer and Trevor Story followed with a 466-foot shot to chase the Milwaukee starter. Reliever Zack Godley gave up a single, then a 456-foot homer to C.J. Cron to make it 6-5 with no outs. One out later, Joshua Fuentes tied it with the fourth of the inning.

It was the third time in franchise history and second time this season the Rockies hit four homers in an inning, and all three have come at Coors Field. The first time came June 6, 1999, against the Brewers and most recently April 2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Milwaukee took the lead in the ninth when pinch-hitter Jace Peterson singled off Daniel Bard (3-4), stole second and scored on a play at the plate on Vogelbach’s hit.

Devin Williams (3-1) struck out the side in the eighth to earn the win. Brad Boxberger pitched the ninth for his third save in as many chances. Daniel Bard 3-4) took the loss.

Cron finished with three hits. Raimel Tapia had a pair of singles in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, the longest current streak in the majors. Colorado managed just two singles after the sixth inning. Kolten Wong’s two-run homer and two singles helped the Brewers take a 6-0 lead off Colorado starter Chi Chi Gonzalez.

Brewers: LHP Brett Anderson (2-4, 4.24) opens a three-game series at the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. First pitch is at 8:40 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.  The Diamondbacks have lost 17 straight.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Indians nipped the Pirates 2-1, the Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Braves, winning the first game  9-1 but losing the second 1-0, the Cubs blanked the Marlins 2-0 and the Padres slipped past the Reds 3-2.  The Brewers and Cubs remained tied for first in the NL Central, the Reds and Cardinals are 4 games back and the Pirates are 14 games out.

The Milwaukee Bucks withstood Kevin Durant’s NBA-record 48 points in a Game 7, advancing to the Eastern Conference finals by beating the Brooklyn Nets 115-111 in overtime Saturday night.  Giannis Antetokounmpo had 40 points and 13 rebounds, and Khris Middleton made the tiebreaking shot with 40 seconds left in the first overtime Game 7 in 15 years. The Bucks held on from there when Durant missed two jumpers, the last an airball with 0.3 seconds remaining. Middleton added 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who reached the East finals for the second time in three years. They will play either Philadelphia or Atlanta in a series that starts Wednesday night.  Durant played all 53 minutes and forced OT with a turnaround jumper that was just inches from being a 3-pointer that would have won it with a second left.

He added nine rebounds and six assists, but didn’t have enough help with injured Kyrie Irving watching from the baseline and James Harden unable to locate his shot after missing most of the first four games with right hamstring tightness. Harden had 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, but was 5 for 17 from the field.  The Bucks host the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday night at Fiserv Forum in the first game of the NBA Eastern Conference finals.  The winner advances to the NBA Finals.
