Thoughtful Gift For FDL Girl Hit By Car
An 8-year-old Fond du Lac girl hit by a car on June 7th as she tried to cross one of the city’s busiest streets with her bicycle has received an unexpected but much appreciated gift. Miaya Hartwig was taken to St. Agnes Hospital in critical condition and later was flown to Children’s Hospital with head and shoulder injuries. The Fond du Lac Police officers who assisted in her life saving efforts wanted to do more. Recently Officer Marcus Clapper met with Miaya and her family and presented her with a new bike and bike helmet. Interim Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says they are grateful she made a full recovery and is doing well. He commended his officers for their thoughtful gift. (Fond du Lac Police Department photo)
Vaccine Effective Against Variants
COVID-19 vaccines are proving to be effective in fighting off the Delta variant of the virus, but the problem is vaccination rates are going down as the number of new cases increases with the variant. Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says less than half of Wisconsin’s population has been fully immunized against the coronavirus. “Just less than half of the population in Wisconsin has been fully vaccinated and the Delta variant is of concern with one out of five cases is now a Delta variant but the vaccine is very effective against all of the variants so far. “ Puhlmann-Becker says the COVID vaccine is more effective than past vaccines that helped to eradicate polio, mumps, rubella and measles. He says that’s due largely to the technology we’ve been working on for the past 20 years for communicable diseases.
COVID Testing At Hospitals
Agnesian HealthCare, an SSM Health member, is doing COVID-19 testing at its hospitals in Fond du Lac, Ripon, and Waupun. Nicole Gill is Chief Nursing Officer for the Ripon Medical Center and Waupun Memorial Hospital. She says the testing is only for those who might be sick with the virus or is scheduled to have a procedure at one of their facilities. She says test results can come back as quick as in the same day. “So the results can come back quite quickly. I know at the beginning of this pandemic people were used to it maybe taking days to receive those results. Now we can receive the results usually same day.” People entering the facilities are screened and are asked to wear face masks or facial coverings.
