For the third time in the last 16 seasons, the Green Bay Packers will play a game on Christmas Day. The Packers will host the Cleveland Browns at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 25 as part of an NFL doubleheader that day. The Packers are 1-1 on Christmas Day since 2005, with both opponents having been the Chicago Bears. The Bears beat the Packers 24-17 at Lambeau Field in 2005, while Green Bay got its revenge six years later with a 35-21 home win. As was revealed on Good Day Wisconsin Wednesday morning, the Packers will open the 2021 season in New Orleans against the Saints on FOX 11. This is the third consecutive year the Packers will open their season on the road. The Packers will return home the next week to host the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. The matchup marks the second consecutive year the Packers will battle the Lions in their home opener. Green Bay won last year’s contest, 42-21.
The Packers will travel to Kansas City to face the defending AFC Champion Chiefs in Week 9. The game was added as part of the NFL’s expansion of the regular season to 17 games. The Packers will host the extra game next season. The Packers’ bye week comes in Week 13. The team will conclude the regular season on the road against the Lions. Other schedule highlights include five primetime games, including a Thursday night road game Oct. 28 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Travis Shaw hit a tiebreaking double and Avisaíl García added a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers capitalized on some good fortune to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Wednesday night. The decisive rally that snapped the Cardinals’ four-game winning streak came after it appeared Ryan Helsley (3-1) would retire the side in order. An apparent inning-ending strikeout of Daniel Vogelbach was foiled when the third strike got past catcher Yadier Molina for a wild pitch, enabling Vogelbach to reach first. Shaw followed with a double to the gap in right-center that brought home pinch-runner Pablo Reyes. García capped the outburst with a towering homer to left-center that was projected at 442 feet.
The Cardinals had tied the game in the top of the eighth on Tyler O’Neill’s homer to right off Brandon Woodruff, who struck out 10 and gave up just three hits and one walk in 7 2/3 splendid innings. Woodruff, who has a 1.19 ERA over his last seven starts, carried a no-hitter into the sixth. Devin Williams (1-0) retired Tommy Edman on a grounder with a runner on first to make sure the Cardinals did no more damage in the eighth. The Cardinals brought the potential tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth after Paul Goldschmidt doubled and Nolan Arenado walked, but Josh Hader retired Edmundo Sosa on a fielder’s choice and struck out Molina to earn his eighth save. RHP Corbin Burnes (2-2, 1.53 ERA) returns from the injured list to match up with St. Louis RHP Jack Flaherty (6-0, 2.83) as the three-game series concludes Thursday afternoon. First pitch is at 12:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Wednesday, the Reds beat the Pirates 5-1 and the Indians edged the Cubs 2-1.
RHP Corbin Burnes said Wednesday that a positive test for the coronavirus last month caused him to go on the injured list, but added he was asymptomatic the entire time. Burnes is expected to be activated in time to pitch Thursday. García returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Saturday after dealing with a back issue. He made pinch-hitting appearances Sunday and Tuesday
The Milwaukee Bucks were off Wednesday but are back in action tonight at Indiana. Milwaukee is coming off a 114-102 victory over the Orlando Magic. Milwaukee (44-25) has clinched a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. With three regular season games left, the Bucks are in third place, 1 ½ games behind Brooklyn and three games in back of Philadelphia. The Pacers are 33-36 in the East.
The Green Bay Packers have reportedly signed veteran quarterback Blake Bortles to a one-year deal according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Following the 2021 NFL Draft, Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur and General Manager Brian Gutekunst said the team planned on adding another quarterback. “We’ll add a third arm and maybe a fourth arm as we go through,” Gutekunst said. “We’ve had some conversations before the draft with some veterans and then there’s some rookie guys we’re looking at, as well. So, but yeah, we would never go into camp with two. We’ll at least have three and possibly four.”
Currently the Packers only have two quarterbacks on their roster: Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. The addition of Bortles brings in a quarterback for the team’s offseason on-field workouts. Rodgers is not expected to join the team for voluntary workouts which start May 24. Rodgers’ former backup Tim Boyle signed a deal this offseason with the Detroit Lions. Bortles has familiarity with Packers Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as the two spent time in Jacksonville together. Bortles hasn’t started a game since 2018. Last season he spent time on the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams.
ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported earlier this week, the Packers plan on bringing in quarterback Chad Kelly and Kurt Benkert for a tryout during this weekend’s rookie minicamp.
The AT&T Byron Nelson Tournament gets underway today in McKinney. Texas. Last year Sung Kang won his first PGA Tour title at the event, defeating Matt Every and Scott Piercy by two strokes.

The Midwest Conference (MWC) announced the 2021 Men’s Tennis Divisional All-Conference Awards Wednesday morning, as selected by the league’s head coaches, with Junior Drew Jorgensen earning Ripon’s lone selection. Due to this year’s divisional-play format, Conference teams garnered All-Conference selections based on the final seeding in their respective divisions. An Exercise Science major from Fond du Lac, Wis., Jorgensen played at both number one singles and number one doubles this season. He went 5-4 in singles play, while playing against the best competition in the MWC, while going 4-5 in doubles play with two different partners combined. Jorgensen played a key role in Ripon defeating Cornell (Iowa) and St. Norbert each for the first time in 14 years. This marks Jorgensen’s first career All-Conference appearance. He is also a two-time Academic All-Conference performer.
Senior Jackie Zeman has been named Midwest Conference Field Performer of the Week, as released Tuesday by the conference office, for her record-breaking performance over the weekend. Competing at Lawrence University, Zeman broke her own school record in the Pole Vault at Saturday’s Viking Invite. Her jump of 11-07 broke her previous mark by seven inches and ranks her in the top 30 in NCAA Division-III and top three in the MWC. Also named Red Hawk of the Week this week, Zeman is a three-time Academic All-Conference performer as a Business Management and Economics major.
