Sports for May 17th

The Milwaukee Brewers nearly let one slip away yesterday afternoon at American Family Field, blowing an 8-0 lead, and barely holding on for a 10-9 victory over the Atlanta Braves.  The win averted a three-game sweep by Atlanta.  The Brewers got their bats started early.  Daniel Vogelbach’s two-out, two-run double in the third inning snapped Milwaukee’s streak of 18 hitless at-bats with runners in scoring position, and Avisaíl García hit a two-run home run in the fifth that briefly settled into the glove of leaping Braves center fielder Ender Inciarte, then slipped out on the far side of the wall.  The lead grew to 8-0 before the Braves mounted a stunning rally in a seven-run seventh, when usually-reliable reliever J.P. Feyereisen struggled, as did shortstop Luis Urías. He fielded a pair of one-out ground balls cleanly but didn’t get an out on either of them, extending the inning for Freddie Freeman’s grand slam, which made it an 8-7 game.  It was 10-7 in the eighth when Urías made his second error in as many innings and let in another Braves run, and 10-8 going into the ninth before the Braves put up a series of long at-bats against Josh Hader.  Hader gave up one runs on two hits before striking out the last two Braves with runners on second and third to pick up his ninth save.  Starter Willy Peralta (4-1) was dominant in his six innings, giving up just two hits while striking out eight and walking one.  Atlanta starter Huascar Ynoa (4-2) was pounded for five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.  The Brewers are off today before opening a series Tuesday in Kansas City  against the Royals.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday, the Cubs beat the Tigers 5-1,  the Reds nipped the Rockies 7-6, the Giants beat the Pirates 4-1 and the Padres downed the Cardinals 5-3.  St. Louis leads the Brewers by two games in the NL Central.

Thaddeus Young scored 20 points, Coby White added 19 and the Chicago Bulls beat Milwaukee 118-112 with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the rest of the Bucks’ starters missing the regular-season finale Sunday night. The Bucks ruled Khris Middleton out because of lingering soreness in his left ankle, then scratched Antetokounmpo and the rest of the starters once it became clear the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference was out of reach. The Brooklyn Nets clinched the position by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers. That locked Milwaukee into the third spot and a first-round matchup against the Miami Heat.Bucks rookie Jordan Nwora set career highs with 34 points and 14 rebounds. Jeff Teague scored 23. But with its top players out, Milwaukee came up short after winning eight of nine.

The Bulls prevented the Bucks from becoming the first NBA team to go unbeaten in its division, with an 11-1 mark against the Central. Chicago also snapped a 12-game losing streak to Milwaukee. Lauri Markkanen scored 17, Ryan Arcidiacono set season highs with 14 points and four 3-pointers, and the Bulls finished their first season under coach Billy Donovan on a winning note — even though Zach Lavine (right knee tendinitis) and Nikola Vucevic (hip) did not play. The Bulls were up by four early in the fourth when Arcidiacono hit three 3-pointers in a span of a minute as the lead grew to 100-89.  The Bucks open the playoffs at home against Miami.

The UW-Oshkosh Titans won their first WIAC softball tournament title since 2008, and punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament in the process, by beating UW-Whitewater 4-0.  The Titans jumped out to an early lead thanks to a base knock to Morgan Rau that drove in senior Acacia Tupa. They’d add another in the top of the second thanks to after a base hit to left by Gabby Buikema to bring home Ana Iliopourlos and give UW-Oshkosh an early 2-0 lead.  They’d add to the advantage again in the fifth thanks a base hit by Hannah Ritter that drove in Amanda McIlhaney.  That proved proved to be enough with Maddie Fink in the center circle. The sophomore allowed just six hits on the afternoon in a complete game shutout victory. On Monday the Titans will find out who they face in the NCAA tournament later this week.

The Packers wrapped up their rookie mini-camp over the weekend.  Green Bay brought in two quarterbacks for rookie minicamp on a tryout basis- Chad Kelly and Kurt Benkert.  The quarterback room heading into OTA’s will consist of Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, Blake Bortles and Kurt Benkert.
