Tough Spring For Deputies
It’s been a couple of tough months for some of Fond du Lac County’s deputies. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says one of their deputies was injured on State Highway 26 north of Rosendale trying to prevent a man under the influence from drugs from harming himself. The man had already jumped out of vehicle that was going 45 miles an hour. The deputy suffered a serious knee injury trying to subdue the man. “The deputy got his foot basically caught in a rumble strip along the edge of the road and instead of his knee bending forward like it is supposed to bend it bent inward and he actually blew his knee out.” The deputy will need surgery and 8 to 12 months to recover from it. During a more recent incident deputies were assisting the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office on a drunken driving arrest along the county line when a deputy was punched in the face. Waldschidt says the officer got a couple of good “goose eggs” and needed to be treated by medical staff for those lacerations and cuts.
Oneida Casino Shooting
We could learn more today about the two people who were shot and killed by a gunman who was then killed by police at the Radisson in the Oneida Casino complex in Ashwaubenon Saturday evening. The Brown County Sheriff’s Office held off on that yesterday to notify the family members. The shooting occurred in the Duck Creek Bar and Grill, located inside the Radisson, which is part of the Oneida Casino complex. Sheriff’s officials say the shooter had ties to the casino from an employment status. The gunman was looking for a specific person who wasn’t there at the time of the shooting. Brown County authorities will hold a news conference this morning about the shooting. It is scheduled for 10 am.
Two Ripon Students Expelled For Drug Related Incident
The Ripon School Board this past week expelled two students for engaging in conduct at school that endangered the health and safety of others, which involved drugs. The Board determined the students are both eligible for early readmission before the expiration of the respective expulsions. District officials say they take matters involving school safety very seriously. They note in this case it resulted in the expulsion of two students.
Drug Search At Ripon Schools Was Scheduled
Ripon Police last Thursday morning conducted a drug search at the High School, Middle School and Catalyst Charter School. The search using six teams of officers and police dogs was a cooperative effort between the police department and school district and was scheduled. Instruction continued during the search with limited access to hallways. The dogs had a total of six hits, three in the parking lot and three in lockers. As a result of the hits, police and school administration are looking into one substance found in a vehicle.
Recall Petition About Representing Constituency
A petition is being circulated in the Rosendale-Brandon School District to try and recall two longtime school board members who voted in favor of closing the Brandon Middle School. During a February board meeting Jenni Riedeman and Craig Mulder voted in the majority in a 6 to 3 vote to close the school due to dwindling attendance. District Superintendent Wayne Weber says the two board members represent the Brandon area on the board and petitioners felt they were not best representing how their constituents felt on the issue. “That’s why those two are the target of the recall because according to the petition submitted they did not represent their constituents and they did not hear enough from their constituents.” Weber says petitioners have until June 7th to gather 662 signatures or 25 percent of the number of registered voters in the district who voted in the last Governor’s race to force a recall election. He points out that Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg estimates the cost of staging an election for the school district will be about $10,000, more if there is a primary race.

Choosing Who To Help
While neighboring Michigan is the hotspot for new COVID-19 cases in the U.S. the situation is more serious in India where they are recording 300,000 new cases a day. Both have asked for help from the Biden Administration. Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says the problem in India goes beyond needing vaccine. “They are running out of oxygen, PPE, medicine, they don’t have vaccine and we know because this started in Wuhan that we know that it only takes a few people to spread it around the world because it spreads so fast and so insidiously.” He says it’s easier to address your own problems at home, but the U.S. is looked to as a World leader with enough resources to help a less fortunate country.
