Click It Or Ticket Gets Underway Monday

Law Enforcement agencies across the state will be participating in the “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign that begins Monday and runs through June 6th. Columbia County Sheriff Roger Brandner says 89 percent of Wisconsin drivers wear safety belts. He notes the 11 percent who fail to buckle up accounted for 43 percent of all the drivers and passengers killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes in 2020. Failure to fasten a seat belt is among the most common traffic violations in Wisconsin, resulting in more than 27,000 traffic convictions last year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019, 55 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night were not wearing their seat belts. Nighttime enforcement will be one focus of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

The State Patrol arrested a 28-year-old Campbellsport man early Wednesday morning on State Highway 67 in Fond du Lac County for driving under the influence with a child under 16 years old in the vehicle. A state trooper pulled Adam Konstanski over on Highway 67 northbound near Campbellsport and detected indicators of impairment. Congressman Grothman Votes Against January Sixth Commission

Congressman Glenn Grothman voted against the bill Wednesday that would create a commission to look into the January 6th riots at the Nation’s Capital. He says Democrats would have complete control over putting together the panel, which would be one-sided. “In this new commission the staff could all wind up being Democratic staff which really wouldn’t be fair because a lot of times your staff determines the outcome of what a committee or a commission has.” The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah previously attended a hearing and it surprised him how little was known about what happened during the rioting. The bill was passed by the House, but is not expected to make it through the Senate.

Kids Masking

A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says the Ripon Area School District made the right decision continuing a face mask requirement for students and staff in its preschools, elementary schools and middle school. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says all along it was a mystery why younger children didn’t seem to be getting the virus. “Since the beginning we’ve been somewhat amazed at little children. At first we thought they didn’t get it. Now we know they may be getting it, but they don’t show symptoms they don’t show the kind of symptoms that adults do they don’t get as sick as adults they may not show any symptoms for that matter.” On the other hand he says we do need to vaccinate children at some point if we want to reach the level of herd immunity needed to get rid of the coronavirus. The Ripon Area School District is allowing kids 16 or older who are completely immunized against the virus to go without masks at the high school.

Discover Wisconsin Could Generate Segment On Ripon

Ripon Main Street Executive Director Craig Tebon says Discover Wisconsin is interested in developing an episode that features downtown Ripon. The episode would focus on shopping as well as featured downtown events. The cost for a downtown Ripon feature that runs four to five minutes is $12,500. Tebon is hoping two or three businesses might be interested in splitting the costs. Discover Wisconsin is broadcast throughout the Midwest each week and averages about 500,000 viewers in top markets like Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay and Wausua. In addition the program generates hundreds of thousands of impressions on social media.

Bikefest Is Saturday In Green Lake

Green Lake Greenways and the Freeland Film Festival team up Saturday for Bikefest. Events will kick off with a Bike Rodeo for the kids at 2:30 pm at the Mill Pond Terrace in Green Lake. Then at 3:30 there will be a family bike ride on the Green Lake Trail out to Christianos for a beverage. At 4:30 adult activities begin with spin classes and competitions. The day will be capped off at dusk with a showing of the film “Breaking Away.” The “bike-in” movie will be outdoors at the Town Square Terrace. Barry Rogers of Green Lake Greenways says teaming up with the Freeland Film Festival for the “bike-in” movie seemed like a natural thing to do with monies for the Bikefest benefitting both groups. “You know a small community you go to church together, you are on the same boards in the community and we got to talking and we thought wouldn’t it be fun to revisit the old drive-in movie and have a bike-in movie.” The 1979 movie is about a bike relay race and a clash between the “townies” and university students. The two groups will partner again in August for another bike-in movie in the vineyard at Vines and Rushes.
