Sports for April 21st

The Brewers had another strong showing from Corbin Burnes in route to a 6-0 shutout over the San Diego Padres Tuesday night.  Burnes went six innings, giving up four hits while striking out 10 and issuing no walks.  Burnes has struck out 40 this season and still has not issued a walk, a Major League record. He also lowered his ERA to 0.37.  The previous mark belonged to Adam Wainwright, who whiffed 35 batters in 2013 before issuing a free pass. Eric Yardley, Brad Boxberger and Drew Rasmussen each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Milwaukee’s offense erupted for five runs in the fifth to put the game away. Billy McKinney hit his second homer of the season in the fifth and Jace Peterson hit his first homer of the year in the ninth.  Travis Shaw and Omar Narvaez drove in two runs each for the Brewers and Narvaez went 3-4.  San Diego starter Chris Paddack went five innings, giving up five runs and saw his record drop to 1-2.  The two teams close out their series this afternoon with a pair of right-handers squaring off.  Adrian Houser (2-4) starts for Milwaukee against San Diego’s Dinelson Lamet, who is coming off the disabled list and making his first appearance of the season. First pitch is at 3:10 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday, the Nationals edged the Cardinals 3-2, the Cubs beat the Mets 3-1, the Diamondbacks nipped the Reds 5-4 and the Pirates game at Detroit was postponed.

In the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks were off Tuesday night.  They’re back in action Thursday night at home, hosting the Philadelphia 76ers.   The Bucks (35-22) are in third place in the Eastern Conference, 3 ½ games behind Brooklyn and four games in back of Philadelphia (39-18).

In college baseball on Tuesday, Ripon College split a doubleheader with Beloit College, losing the first game 14-4 in 7 innings but winning the second game 10-9.
