Sports for April 20th

The Brewers hit three solo home runs on the way to a 3-1 win over the Padres in their series opener at San Diego Monday night. Luis Urias started things off in the third inning with his second homer of the year off Padres starter Joe Musgrove, who took the loss and drops to 2-2.  Billy McKinney hit his first home run of the season off Musgrove in the fifth and then pinch-hitter Tyrone Taylor finished off the scoring in the eighth with his first homer of the year off Drew Pomeranz. The Padres scored their only run of the game in the first inning.  After the Brewers pitchers had somewhat of an off-day against Pittsburgh Sunday, Brandon Woodruff (1-0) turned in another strong outing, giving up one run on one hit in six innings, while striking out seven and walking three. Josh Hader pitched the ninth and picked up his second save.  Musgrove had a solid outing to, giving up two runs on four hits in seven innings while striking out 13 and walking just one.  Milwaukee improved to 9-7 and trails Cincinnati by a half-game in the NL Central. The teams meet again tonight as Corbin Burnes (1-1) starts against Chris Paddack (1-1).  First pitch is at 9:10 CDT and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday, the Cardinals pounded the Nationals 12-5.

Devin Booker made a free throw with 0.3 seconds left after getting fouled on a jump shot to give the Phoenix Suns a 128-127 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night. After Khris Middleton had tied the game on a 3-pointer with 22.1 seconds left, Jae Crowder inbounded a pass to Booker, who attempted to get free for a shot while getting hounded by Jrue Holiday. As Booker finally put up a shot from in front of Phoenix’s bench just before the buzzer, P.J. Tucker also approached him. Tucker was called for the foul. Booker made the first free throw for his 24th point of the night amid a chorus of boos from the Milwaukee crowd. Booker missed the second shot, but the buzzer went off before the Bucks could put up any kind of shot.  Chris Paul had 22 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds for the Suns, who were opening a five-game trip in which they play five of the top six teams in the Eastern Conference standings.Paul increased his career assist total to 10,145 to overtake Magic Johnson (10,141) for fifth place in NBA history. Mikal Bridges had 21 points and DeAndre Ayton scored 20 to help the Suns rally from a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points, Middleton 26 and Holiday 25 for the Bucks, who have lost five straight home games. The Bucks are off until Thursday when they have the first of two straight home matchups with 76ers.  In their lone previous meeting this season, the Bucks won 109-105 in overtime at Philadelphia on March 17.

Wisconsin has added Wake Forest transfer Jahcobi Neath to its backcourt. The 6-foot-3 Neath averaged 3.8 points, 1.7 assists and 15.8 minutes this past season as a sophomore at Wake Forest. Wisconsin will have a much different team from the one that went 18-13 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The five leading scorers from that team were all seniors. Brad Davison is the only senior from the 2020-21 team who has indicated he plans to play for the Badgers next season.
