Omar Narvaez hit a two-run homer, Jace Peterson added a solo shot and six pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts for the Milwaukee Brewers, who beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep. San Diego right-hander Dinelson Lamet left his season debut after two scoreless innings due to right forearm tightness. The Padres closed out a 1-5 homestand with their seventh loss in nine games overall. Milwaukee pitchers allowed only three runs in the series, none by the bullpen. Adrian Houser allowed both San Diego runs Wednesday in 4 2/3 innings, and the bullpen shut out the Padres the rest of the way. The relievers struck out 11. The Brewers moved into first place in the NL Central and lead the Reds by 1 ½ games, the Cubs by 2 ½ and the Cardinals and Pirates by three games.
Milwaukee won 3-1 Monday night and 6-0 Tuesday night. Padres manager Jayce Tingler was ejected in the eighth after he calmly walked out to argue balls and strikes with home plate umpire Tom Hallion. The Padres loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth but failed to score. Brad Boxberger struck out Tommy Pham before J.P. Feyereisen came on and struck out pinch-hitter Wil Myers and Victor Caratini. San Diego had runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth before Eric Hosmer struck out to end the game, giving Josh Hader a hard-earned third save. The Padres stranded 12 baserunners. They lead the NL with 162 runners stranded in 18 games. Lamet appeared to be pitching well against the Brewers, striking out four after a single to start the game. He threw 19 strikes out of 29 pitches, reaching 97 mph on his fastball. Tingler said Lamet will get an MRI. The 28-year-old Lamet had not pitched since leaving his final start of 2020 with elbow discomfort and missing the playoffs. He received multiple opinions that surgery wasn’t needed and underwent platelet-rich plasma therapy in the offseason. Lamet had Tommy John surgery in 2018 and didn’t return until the second half of 2019. His quick exit came a day after left-hander Adrian Morejon had Tommy John surgery.
Brent Suter (1-1) got the win with four strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Keone Kela (2-1) took the loss. Narvaez connected for his third homer in the sixth, giving Milwaukee a 3-2 lead. Peterson hit an RBI single in the fourth and a two-out drive in the sixth.
The Brewers get a day off before starting a three-game series at the Chicago Cubs on Friday. LHP Brett Anderson (2-1, 2.65 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Brewers vs. RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-2, 6.92).
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Wednesday, the Pirates nipped the Tigers 3-2, the Nationals shutout the Cardinals 1-0, the Diamondbacks edged the Reds 5-4 and the Cubs pounded the Mets 16-4.
Veteran utilityman Dee Strange-Gordon signed a minor league contract with Milwaukee and will be assigned to the team’s alternate training site. SS Luis Urias remains sidelined after injuring his right calf when he hit a home run Monday night.
In the NBA the Bucks are back in action tonight after two days off as they host the first-place Philadelphia 76ers. Philadelphia leads the Eastern Conference by a half-game over second-place Brooklyn and 3 ½ games over Milwaukee.
Rockets guard Sterling Brown is back in Houston recovering from injuries sustained when he was assaulted outside a strip club in Miami early Monday morning. The Rockets were in Miami to play the Heat when the incident occurred. The Rockets released a statement about the incident on Monday that said Brown was the victim of an assault. Coach Stephen Silas said that he spoke to Brown on Tuesday and that he reached out to him Wednesday, but had not gotten in touch with him. He said Brown is seeing doctors and working with the team’s training staff as he recovers.
Packers offensive lineman Billy Turner is the team’s recipient of the annual Ed Block Courage Award for the 2020 season. Every year, each NFL team votes for the player it feels best exemplifies commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. A league-wide winner of the Ed Block Courage Award is then selected from the 32 team honorees, with this year’s winner being chosen Saturday, April 24, in a virtual ceremony.
The award is named for Ed Block, the head athletic trainer of the Baltimore Colts from 1954-77 who earned a Purple Heart under General George S. Patton in World War II. Turner joined the Packers as a free agent in 2019 and has become an integral piece on a Green Bay offensive line that has dealt with numerous injuries over the last two seasons. He’s also been a vocal advocate for social justice issues and an active participant in several community efforts, including “The Irie Project,” an artistic fashion initiative he founded in partnership with a fashion designer, art teacher, and elementary school students. Turner has missed just two games as a member of the Packers. Last season he started games at three different positions – six at right tackle, four at right guard and four at left tackle. He also started both playoff games at left tackle. In 2019, he started every game at right guard. Recent team winners of the Ed Block Courage Award for the Packers include kicker Mason Crosby in 2019 and quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2018.

Primarily a second baseman but also an occasional first baseman and third baseman, he had 12 homers and a career-best 83 RBIs for the Pirates in 2011, and reached his career high of 23 homers in both 2014 and 2016.
