Sheriff’s Deputy Oshkosh Man Injured During Incident On State Highway 26

A 38-year-old Oshkosh man and 27-year-old Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy were injured during an incident on State Highway 26 in the Town of Eldorado. The initial call on Monday at 11:21 am was about a suspicious man looking into windows. Deputies responded to N9515 State Highway 26 and found the man walking a short distance south of that residence. When they talked to the man he appeared to be under the influence of narcotics or experiencing a mental health episode. He also had injuries consistent with “road rash” or experienced from sliding along a roadway. The man ran across traffic to the other side of the highway. He struggled with the deputies when they tried to detain him for his own safety and one of the deputies suffered a significant knee injury. A second deputy used a taser to bring the man under control. The man and deputy were both taken to a hospital where they were treated and released. The man was taken to the County Jail on several charges stemming from his contact with deputies. It was learned he had jumped from a moving vehicle on State Highway 26 in Winnebago County prior to his contact with the deputies.

Boaters Asked To Be More Considerate

Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz is asking recreational boaters that use sand bars to be more considerate of adjacent property owners. He says last year private property owners had some issues with boat owners using popular sandbars. Those issues included boats anchored in the waterways near sandbars blocking access to privately-owned piers. There were also reports of trespassing, littering, vulgar language, lewd behavior, and boisterous activities. In one instance a recreational boater ordered a pizza and instructed the delivery driver to use the private property of a landowner.  Matz is asking for voluntary cooperation and more consideration.

Recall Petition Being Circulated In Rosendale Brandon School District

An effort is underway in the Rosendale-Brandon School District to recall two school board members who voted in February in favor of closing the Brandon Middle School. Jenni Riedeman and Craig Mulder are the two longest standing members of the board. By a 6 to 3 vote the school board voted to close the school and send those students to Rosendale. The district is expecting a 30 percent drop in attendance at the Brandon Middle School over the next four years. Those circulating the petition will have to gather 662 signatures to force a recall election. They have 60 days to gather the signatures and the district would have a month to certify the petition. District Superintendent Wayne Weber says if there is a recall election it would likely be held in August or September.

The Fifteen Minute Wait

One of the precautions taken when you receive a COVID-19 vaccine is a 15-minute waiting period after you get the shot. It is in the unlikely chance that you may have an anaphylactic reaction to the shot. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says a writer from the Washington Post wrote about their experiences when they talked to people who had gotten vaccinated and no one had an allergic reaction. “And they asked several of these people what they had seen and really I think they said they saw one instance of something that looked like a response to the vaccine, but turned out not to be. But they had multiple incidences of people who had gotten worked up about it.”Puhlmann-Becker says everything is done out of an abundance of caution, which is another example of why the system works.

Business Trends

The president and CEO of Envision Greater Fond du Lac says they saw some spending patterns as the pandemic ramped up and then began to slowly return towards normal. Sadie Parafiniuk says while people were stuck at home last fall they saw an increase in sales on items like chest freezers, durable goods, and home renovation type items. “That people were doing home remodeling projects, they were investing in durable goods like fridges, freezers, furniture so some of those businesses did really well.” She says with people starting to return to work a new pattern emerged which bolstered retail spending. Parafiniuk says people were more willing to spend money on new clothes, shoes, makeup and going out to restaurants. She points out restaurants will probably be the last business to recover to pre-pandemic levels.

NOAA Weather Radio A Good Idea

The Communications and Emergency Management Director for Fond du Lac County says it’s a good idea to have several ways you can be notified of Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado warnings. Bobbi Hicken says the NOAA Weather Radio is still the best way because it will sound when a warning is issued by the National Weather Service no matter what time of day or night. “The NOAA Weather Radio is still by far the best thing that you can have. It is going to wake you up in the middle of the night if there a tornado warning, a thunderstorm warning also.” She says weather apps are good to have for your phone in case you are out and about when a warning is issued. Last week was Severe Weather and Tornado Awareness Week in Wisconsin.

Pet License Reminder

Ripon Police are reminding dog and cat owners that their pets are required to be licensed in the city. They are urging people to pick up a license saying that many dogs and cats that were licensed last year haven’t been licensed yet this year. Proof of vaccination is required when you pay the license fee at the city hall. Your pet will be registered with the city when you pick up their license.
