Wildfire Danger Remains High
The Town of Ripon is one of the latest to see a grass fire. It occurred in a field by the corner of Island Road and Elbow Road Monday afternoon. Firefighters from the Ripon Area Fire District responded to the call about a possible grass fire. They called for mutual aid to battle the blaze. Governor Tony Evers signed an executive order Monday declaring a State of Emergency in response to elevated wildfire conditions throughout Wisconsin. In issuing the order he said all of Wisconsin was at a very high fire danger. The combination of dry vegetation, unseasonably warm temperatures, low relative humidity and increasing south or southeast winds were expected to continue to elevate fire weather conditions.
Beaver Dam Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Murder Of Ex Wife
The 33-year-old Beaver Dam man that murdered his ex-wife in March of 2019 was sentenced Monday to life in prison. Ulisses Medina Espinosa was sentenced in Dodge County court. He shot Stacia Hollinshead to death while she and their 5-year-old daughter were visiting the girl’s grandparents in Beaver Dam two years ago. Hollinshead was an Assistant State Attorney in Dekalb County, Illinois. Her family members spoke at the sentencing describing her as a hardworking, intelligent, devoted mother who had wanted to be an attorney since she was a child. At the sentencing Dodge County District Attorney Kurt Klomberg said Ulisses Medina Espinosa is a man of terrible character and is ultimately a coward.
Redgranite Man Arrested For Fifth OWI
A 51-year-old Redgranite man was arrested for his fifth operating while under the influence offense Saturday morning on I-41 near Lost Arrow Road in Fond du Lac County. A state trooper stopped Timothy Williams for speeding. Williams showed signs of impairment and was arrested after field sobriety testing. He was booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail on charges of fifth offense OWI, speeding, open intoxicants, possession of drug paraphernalia and schedule IV narcotics. The arrest occurred just before 10:30 Saturday morning.
Spring Election
Voters on the western end of Fond du Lac County will have a few more races to vote on today than during February’s primary. Among those races are Eldorado Town Board and Chairperson, Ripon Town Board, Brandon Village Trustee, Rosendale Village President, and Rosendale-Brandon School Board member for the Brandon area. County-wide there are races for County Executive and County Judge for Branch 3. There is also a statewide race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction and a race for Court of Appeals District 2. Altogether there are 20 contested races on Fond du Lac County ballots for the Spring Election.
FVTC President Retiring This Summer
Fox Valley Technical College President and CEO Dr. Susan May is retiring. May has been with the college for 38 years the last 13 years as its president. Her retirement is effective July 31st of this year. May say her career in education actually spans 43 years and it’s time to see what that next chapter in her life holds. May says technical colleges will continue to have a role in education because of the technical demands for our workforce. The College’s Board of Trustees has already launched a search and hiring process for her successor.
Medal For Maggie
Another effort is underway to get a Fond du Lac World War II hero the Medal of Honor. Congressman Glenn Grothman and U.S. Senator Ron Johnson recently introduced legislation to posthumously award Lieutenant Colonel James “Maggie” Megellas the Medal of Honor. Megellas is a Fond du Lac native and graduate of Ripon College. Congressman Grothman says Maggie’s heroics during the Battle of the Bulge in particular are worthy of the honor. Megellas was the most decorated soldier from the 82nd Airborne Division. Megellas passed away last April at the age of 103. There have been several efforts over the years to have him awarded the Medal of Honor.
Highway Maintenance Projects
The state’s Department of Transportation has announced several highway maintenance projects in Fond du Lac and Winnebago counties this week. In Fond du Lac County pavement repair will be performed on northbound and southbound US Highway 151between State Highway 49 and the Fond du Lac/Dodge County line Wednesday and Thursday from 7 am to 4 pm. A moving lane closure will take place. In Winnebago County maintenance crews will be repairing pavement on northbound and southbound State Highway 44 between the Fond du Lac/Winnebago County line and State Highway 44 on Thursday from 7 am to 3:30 pm. A flagging operation will be used during repairs.
June Dairy Officer Nominations
The Markesan Police Department is looking for nominees for its Honorary June Dairy Officer. The only criteria for the nomination is that the child live in the Markesan School District, the child is between the ages of 7 and 18 and that the child has shown a great deal of character, integrity, and courage in their lives and community. To nominate someone send a private message on the Markesan Police Department’s Facebook page, drop off a short letter at the department explaining who you are nominating or you can mail your nomination to Chief William Pflum, PO Box 352, Markesan, Wisconsin 53946. Nominations are due on April 30th.
