Funding Coming Together For Ripon Senior Center Trailhead Facility Project

Ripon Senior Activity Center Executive Director Noreen Johnson learned last week that $552,000 in funding for a new Senior Center and Trailhead facility in Murray Park has been secured.  She says City Administrator Adam Sonntag informed her that the money the city had previously used for a revolving loan fund from a Community Development Block Grant would be coming back to the city for the project. In addition nearly $500,000 from the Mitchell estate will be used for the project as well. Together those two sources of funding are close to $1 million for a $1.5 million project. The City is still waiting to hear about a Stewardship Grant from the state that would provide the rest of the funding.

Public Input Sought In Superintendent Search

The Oshkosh Area School District Board of Education is seeking community input as the District conducts a search for its next superintendent. As part of the search process, community members are asked to complete a brief anonymous survey, which will be open through next Wednesday. The survey is available in six languages and can be accessed by a link on the district’s website. Responses must be completed by no later than 4 pm next Wednesday. The survey will provide insight into the skills, professional experiences, values, and priorities district families, staff, and residents believe the next superintendent should possess. Addition information about the superintendent search process, including the updated timeline is available at the district website.

Johnson And Johnson Vaccine On Pause

A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says the pause on using the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine gives federal officials time to see if it really is causing a rare type of blood clot. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says it will allow time to see if there is a correlation to the vaccine use and the 6 people out of 6.8 million people vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson vaccine. “My guess if there is any number out of 6 million, any number of things out of 6 million people could have happened just naturally happened because it happened doesn’t mean there is a correlation, but they paused it to make sure there isn’t a correlation.” A CDC panel met Wednesday choosing not to vote on a recommendation leaving the temporary pause on the vaccine in place. All six blood clot victims were women between the ages of 18 and 48. Their symptoms happened between six and 13 days after they received the vaccine.  One woman died and three are still hospitalized.

Statewide Tornado Drill Today

As part of Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week there will be a statewide tornado drill at 1:45 and 6:45 pm today. Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken says the National Weather Service will not be activating the Emergency Alert System at that time so people are encouraged at those times to go to their designated shelter and think about their emergency plans had it been a real tornado.  She says there are too many things that can go wrong with using the actual activation system for a drill. “And what has happened in other locations is somebody forgets to untrip something or change wording and actual alerts go out and cause panic and confusion all of that so that is why they are not actually doing the activations of the system.” Tornado sirens will not be sounded in Fond du Lac County during the drills, but some counties are testing them such as Dodge County.

State Representative Dallman Votes In Favor Of Bills Using Stimulus Monies

State Representative Alex Dallman this week voted in favor of a package of legislation that uses one-time federal stimulus dollars to make critical investments in Wisconsin. Assembly Republicans brought before the floor eleven bills that help out local small businesses, the tourism industry, and the state economy while giving aid to households, helping long-term care facilities and investing in broadband expansion. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says the package of bills is exactly what we need for our state to be able to be proactive as we move forward. The package of legislation uses the $3.2 billion coming to Wisconsin from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
