Sports for March 5th

In Cactus League baseball on Thursday the Brewers lost to the Indians at Maryvale, 5-1.  Cleveland scored three runs in the second inning and then added single runs in the 4th and 6th for a 5-0 lead before Milwaukee scored its only run.  Adrian Houser started for the Brewers and pitched the first inning. Left-hander Eric Lauer pitched the next two innings and took the loss to fall to 1-1.  Aaron Civale (1-0)started for the Indians and pitched the first three innings, giving up no runs and no hits while striking three to pick up the win.  Milwaukee managed just three hits while Cleveland had five.  Milwaukee’s spring training record falls to 3-2.  The Brewers play at the Rockies this afternoon and are at Maryvale Saturday before having the day off on Sunday.

The Bucks nipped the Memphis Grizzlies on the road Thursday night 112-11. Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with 26 points and Khris Middleton added 22 while Thnassis Antetokounmpo  and Pat Connaughton scored 15 and Brook Lopez added 12. Ja Morant led Memphis with 35 and Dillon Brooks added 23.  The Bucks (22-14) remain in third place in the Eastern Conference, a half-game behind Brooklyn and two games in back of first-place Philadelphia.   The Grizzlies had their two-game winning streak snapped and drop to 16-16 in the Western Conference.  Milwaukee is off today before playing at Washington Saturday.

The past two years, LeBron James couldn’t have Giannis Antetokounmpo on his NBA All-Star team because the two of them were captains of their respective squads.

But this year, with Kevin Durant getting the other captaincy opposite James, he made sure he would be playing alongside the NBA’s two-time reigning Most Valuable Player by taking him with the first overall pick of Thursday night’s All-Star Game draft on TNT.

The Steelers announced Thursday they have signed the veteran quarterback  Ben Roethlisberger to a new contract for the upcoming season.  NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Roethlisberger’s new contract includes a structure that will save the Steelers about $15 million in immediate cap space, helping the Steelers move closer to the projected salary cap, which has a floor of $180 million. The new deal achieves this lower cap number by utilizing a signing bonus, a minimum base salary and voidable years, with Roethlisberger helping out by taking a $5 million pay cut that lowers his 2021 salary from $19 million to $14 million, Pelissero added.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Big Ben will receive a $12.925 million signing bonus and a $1.075 million base salary as part of the new contract, which includes four voidable years in order to spread out his cap hit.

The Badgers are on the road Sunday at Iowa.  25th ranked Wisconsin (16-10) lost at Purdue Tuesday night, 73-69 while the fifth ranked Hawkeyes (19-7) are coming off 102-64 home win over Nebraska Thursday night.

Free-agent outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. is joining the Milwaukee Brewers, agreeing to the parameters of a $24 million, two-year contract, this according to a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the details of the agreement were still being negotiated and the deal is subject to a successful physical.

Bradley would have the right to opt out after one year and $13 million, allowing him to become a free agent after after this season. The Boston Globe first reported Bradley’s decision,  Bradley turns 31 on April 19 and is regarded as a top defensive center fielder. He had spent his entire career in Boston and batted .283 with seven homers and 22 RBIs during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He had a .364 on-base percentage and an .814 OPS in 55 games last season.  Bradley earned $4,074,074 in prorated pay from an $11 million salary.  His career numbers include a .239 batting average, .321 on-base percentage. 732 OPS, 98 homers and 376 RBIs. He won a Gold Glove in 2018 and led the American League in assists by a center fielder in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Bradley’s addition seemingly gives the Brewers four potential starters for three outfield spots. The Brewers already have 2019 Gold Glove center fielder Lorenzo Cain, who opted out after playing five games last season but is back in spring training camp. Christian Yelich, the 2018 NL MVP, is set in left field. Milwaukee also brings back Avisaíl García, who usually has played right field but took over in center last year after Cain’s exit. García batted .238 with a .659 OPS in 53 games last season but had a .796 OPS with 20 homers two years ago with Tampa Bay.
