FDL County Cold Case Drawing Attention

12 March 2021 News

It’s been over 25 years since the last time 40-year-old James Ruhland of the Ripon area was last seen, but the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department hasn’t given up on him. Recently the FBI posted information about him on their Violent Criminal Apprehension Program or ViCAP website. Chris Randall is the Lieutenant of Detectives for the Sheriff’s Office. He says technology is different than it was in October of 1995 when Ruhland was last seen hitchhiking in North Fond du Lac and they wouldn’t have had access to a website like ViCAP or social media which allows them to get information out to law enforcement officials across the country. “Having access to that ViCAP website back in 1995 was not going to happen or being able to reach some of these smaller law enforcement agencies in the corner of the United States we didn’t really have that capability.” Randall says the family is offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to a resolution in the case. He says for the family’s sake they are holding out hope James is still alive, but they also have to be realists about it. He encourages anyone with information to call Detective Nate LaMotte at 920-929-3377 or their tip line at 920-906-4777.
