Returning To In Person Learning
Ripon Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says they would have liked to open up in-person learning to 6th through 12th graders sooner, but they took a precautionary approach. So they waited a couple months to see how the schools would be affected by the pandemic and they weren’t seeing COVID-19 being transmitted in the schools. “And we approached the board at that time, but you know everyone kind of thought oh we got these breaks coming up and then there is flu season let’s wait until we through kind of the worst of all of that and revisit to see about bringing our kids back so that’s what brought us to the conversation here in February.” The 6th through 12th graders will be brought back for in-person learning starting March 1st. The school district will continue its mitigation strategies like wearing masks, social distancing, using hand sanitizer and washing hands, and cleaning surfaces more frequently if they are touched by students and staff.
Ripon Common Council To Formalize Dispatch Agreement
The Ripon Common Council tonight will be asked to approve a memorandum of understanding between Fond du Lac County and the City of Ripon concerning the transfer of dispatch responsibilities for the city to the county. Last month the Council voted 6 to 2 to join county dispatch. The memorandum of understanding will formalize the agreement. The Council will also consider declaring the Haas Brewery Stable as surplus property, which will allow the city to try and sell the property to someone interested in preserving it. The Council meets at 7 pm in the Council Chambers at the Ripon City Hall.
Double Masking
Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker feels some of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s comments about double-masking may be misconstrued. He says ideally a face mask with triple layers provides the best protection from COVID-19, but the double masking was suggested because some people are lax about how they wear a single face mask not adequately covering their nose and mouth. Puhlmann-Becker says the masks need to fit tight around the edges and a second mask would pull the first one tighter against your face. “Dr. Fauci contends that the second mask is really meant to hold it closer to your face and holder tighter that you’re not actually breathing around the outside of the mask, but actually breathing through the mask.”
EAA Employment Opportunities
When EAA AirVenture was cancelled last summer it also meant that hundreds of temporary jobs would not be available to provide employment to area residents. Dick Knapinski of EAA says they need all kinds of people for the various jobs connected with putting on the weeklong event at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. “We at EAA hire close to 600 people during the course for that week everything from security to bartending to retail operations to auto parking to all of those things become part of this city of aviation that we create.” Knapinski says anyone that might be interested in working for AirVenture this summer should contact them. EAA AirVenture 2021 is July 26th through August 1st.
Bill Signing Held In Oshkosh
Governor Tony Evers signed a bill in Oshkosh Friday, which would allow pharmacy technicians and students to administer COVID-19 vaccines under certain conditions. Evers signed the bill at the UW-Oshkosh following a tour of the campus’ COVID-19 vaccination clinic that opened last week in partnership with Advocate Aurora Health of Oshkosh and the Winnebago County Public Health Department. The bill allows a pharmacy student who has completed two years of pharmacy school to administer a vaccine under the supervision of a healthcare provider who is authorized to administer vaccines.
