Sports for February 19th
Luka Garza got his points, but a rare road victory at Wisconsin was what mattered. Garza scored 30 points, Joe Wieskamp had 17 and No. 11 Iowa pulled away to beat No. 21 Wisconsin 77-62 on Thursday night at the Kohl Center. Garza raised his nation-leading average to 24.7 points, making 11 of 19 shots, including 4 of 6 from three-point range, and grabbing eight rebounds. Freshman Keegan Murray had 12 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (16-6, 10-5 Big Ten). Micah Potter had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Wisconsin (15-8, 9-7), Brad Davison added 15 points and D’Mitrik Trice 11. The Badgers lost consecutive games for the first time this season. Wisconsin had won 13 of the previous 15 games against Iowa at home. Down 16 early in the second half, Wisconsin pulled to 49-46 on Brad Davison’s 3-pointer with 9:17 remaining. Iowa hit seven consecutive shots to regain control, extending the lead to 68-54 when Garza worked underneath for a layup. Wisconsin is at Northwestern on Sunday.
Norman Powell’s efficiency ensured the Toronto Raptors would extend the Milwaukee Bucks’ longest skid in four years. Powell matched a season high with 29 points, Pascal Siakam had 27 and the Raptors beat Milwaukee 110-96 on Thursday night to hand the Bucks their fifth consecutive loss. Powell shot 9 of 12 overall, 4 of 7 from 3-point range and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. He had 15 points in the first quarter alone and made a pair of 3-pointers to start a 21-4 run that put the Raptors ahead for good. The Bucks last dropped five straight games from Jan. 25 to Feb. 3 in 2017. Milwaukee’s entire slide has come without guard Jrue Holiday, who has missed six consecutive games due to health and safety protocols. Fred VanVleet scored 17 points for the Raptors. Giannis Antetokuonmpo had the Bucks with 23 points, Donte DiVincenzo had 14 points, Khris Middleton 13, Brook Lopez 12 and Bryn Forbes 11. Before the game, Antetokounmpo was named an All-Star Game starter for the fifth consecutive season. The Bucks played in front of 500 spectators — invited guests and family members of players — as they gradually work their way up to playing in front of 10% capacity at Fiserv Forum. The Bucks will welcome the general public to a home game for the first time Sunday when they allow about 1,800 spectators for a game with Sacramento. The Bucks host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday in their third of eight straight home games. The Bucks lost 114-109 at Oklahoma City on Sunday.
The Brewers submitted a 350-page proposal to the City of Milwaukee Health Department calling for 35 percent occupancy at American Family Field — the stadium formerly known as Miller Park — for the club’s April 1 season opener against the Twins. If approved at that occupancy level, between 14,500 and 16,000 fans and employees would be in the building to begin the season, with hope of increasing attendance throughout the year if health and safety conditions continue to improve. Delivery of the weighty proposal capped months of discussions between the Brewers and city health officials, beginning with biweekly telephone calls and leading more weekly to daily back and forth. The team expects to host some of those officials next week for a walkthrough of the ballpark and further discussion. The Brewers anticipate strong demand based on their experience on Thursday, when Spring Training tickets went on sale for home games at American Family Fields of Phoenix. The Brewers gained permission from the City of Phoenix to host about 2,300 fans per game, and several games sold out, including a March 6 game against the Cubs, within hours.
The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2021 third-round draft pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick that could turn into a first-rounder. The Eagles will receive the 85th overall pick in this year’s draft, and the conditional second-rounder can become a first-round pick based on Wentz’s playing time, according to sources. Wentz needs to play at least 75% of the Colts’ offensive snaps for the 2022 conditional pick to convey to a first-rounder, according to sources. The pick also could become a first-rounder if Wentz plays at least 70% of the snaps and the Colts reach the playoffs. But the worst the 2022 pick can be is a second-rounder, meaning the Eagles are assured of netting two value picks for Wentz.
The Green Bay Booyah will change its name and become the G.O.A.T.S for four home games this season, but not in reference to the animal. The team says it will pay tribute to the “greatest of all time” and become the G.O.A.T.S. for Sunday games on June 6, 27, Aug. 1 and 8. The name specifically honors the Green Bay Packers and their history of excellence, from championships to legendary players, according to the team. The team will don green and gold uniforms for the games, with jersey numbers paying tribute to those of legendary Packers. In addition, the team plans to give away a goat bobblehead with a #13 jersey, a reference to the Packers’ 13 NFL championships. Fans will also be able to place bids on the jerseys during a silent auction following the game on Aug. 8.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will return to the diamond on May 4th. The High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers will host the Beloit Snappers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Timber Rattlers have not played since 2019. Last season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendance will be limited at 25 percent capacity. All fans ages two and older will be required to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth. It can be removed for eating and drinking. The team will implement socially distanced seating, requiring people from different households to sit at least six feet apart. The 2021 season will be a little shorter than usual. There are 120 games on the schedule instead of the normal 140 games. There will be no playoffs and no All-Star game. Fans with ticket packages for the 2020 season will be contacted by the team about this season’s packages.
