Ripon College Hosts Black History Month

RIPON — Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history.
Several events are scheduled at Ripon College. More information is available from the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.
- Wednesday, Feb. 3, 12:45 to 1:15 p.m., Healing Circle. Zoom ID: 934 5817 1226. Healing Circles are supportive gatherings that help stabilize communities experiencing crises. Guest healers Pastor Tawana Davis and Dr. Falami Devoe will share how they practice self-care and support community care, wellness and liberation.
- Thursday, Feb. 11, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Black Alumni Panel. Zoom ID: 928 5716 6896. Network with Ripon College Black alumni and learn about various backgrounds of majors, careers and lifestyles. The panel of alumni will talk about their journeys after college, how they honed their skills and developed professionally in various industries.

- Thursday, Feb. 18, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., presentation of “Good Trouble: Six Life Lessons from a Civil Rights Leader.” Zoom ID: 946 9048 7174. John Robert Lewis (1940-2020) was an American civil rights leader and politician best-known for his chairmanship of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and for leading the march that was halted by police violence on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, in 1965. Learn about the six life lessons within his philosophy of “Good Trouble.”
- Thursday, Feb. 25, noon to 1 p.m., Solidarity and Unity March. The Ripon College Diversity Coalition will support a moment of solidarity and unity for Black Lives Matter and racial justice in honor of the late John Lewis. Join in our rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” along with Ripon College choir/music students. The march will begin at noon outside of the Commons, proceed to Smith Hall, and end at the Black Lives Matter mural in downtown Ripon. COVID-19 safety measures will apply, and free T-shirts will be provided for the first 50 people to sign up.
- Thursday, Feb. 25, 5:30 to 7 p.m., MLK Spirit Awards. Zoom ID: 967 8156 5086. Honoring achievements in diversity, equity and inclusiveness. The awards represent equality, justice, and opportunity for all people. Recipients serve as an inspiration to Ripon College for their personal and professional commitment to the ideals epitomized by the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
