Sports for January 13th

The Packers were back on the practice field on Tuesday in preparation for Saturday’s showdown with the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional  round of the playoffs at Lambeau Field.  Green Bay has an explosive offense which will go up against a very good Rams defense. The Rams have allowed only 17 passing touchdowns while picking off 14 passes but the Packers and Aaron Rodgers  are hoping to change that.   Rodgers, the favorite by most experts to win his third league MVP, has thrown a career high 48 touchdown passes, 18 of them to wide receiver Davante Adams.  Adams caught  115 passes for 1,374 yards despite missing two games.  Saturday’s game begins with the pregame at 1:00 and the kickoff at 3:35 and can be heard on FM 102.3 FM, The Bug.

Tickets to the Green Bay Packers-Los Angeles Rams Divisional Round playoff game at Lambeau Field are sold out. The team made 6,000 tickets available to season ticket holders who opted in as the team played without fans for the regular season due to COVID-19. Tickets went on sale Tuesday morning. At about 12:40 p.m., the team announced that they’d sold out. The playoff game is Saturday, January 16. Kickoff is 3:35 p.m.  The tickets cannot be resold or transferred. Fans who purchased tickets will need to screen for COVID-19 symptoms ahead of the game. Anyone who feels ill or has been recently exposed to someone with COVID-19 will be asked not to attend. Seats will be arranged in “socially distanced pods of two, four and six tickets” throughout the stadium. Fans will be required to stay in their pod of seats unless using the bathroom or getting food or drink. Face masks are required. Fans will enter using mobile tickets. Concessions are cashless–meaning pay by card or mobile only. Hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the concourse. The team will also welcome some frontline health care workers and first responders to the game. There will be no tailgating in the Lambeau Field parking lot during the game.

Mike Smith had 16 points and six assists, and No. 7 Michigan remained unbeaten with another dominant performance, routing No. 9 Wisconsin 77-54 on Tuesday night.  The Wolverines (11-0, 6-0) turned this Big Ten showdown into a blowout with a 43-6 run that spanned parts of both halves. It was another masterpiece for coach Juwan Howard’s team, which became the first in college basketball history to beat three ranked opponents in a row by at least 19 points. Michigan set the tone for this one with its rim protection. The Badgers (10-3, 4-2) struggled to finish plays around the basket early on, and the Wolverines had six blocked shots in the first half alone.  Michigan led 26-23 before scoring the last 14 points of the half. A steal and dunk by Franz Wagner made it 33-23. Smith followed that with a steal and a layup. Wagner then drove the baseline and dunked for a 14-point advantage. The start of the second half wasn’t any better for Wisconsin. A 3-pointer by Eli Brooks made it 47-26, and a 3 by Smith made it 54-26. Finally, a layup by Chaundee Brown gave Michigan an almost incomprehensible 69-29 lead. Wagner had 15 points and 10 rebounds. D’Mitrik Trice led Wisconsin with 20 points.  The Badgers have a chance to rebound quickly when they play at Rutgers on Friday night.

Dawson Garcia tied his season high with 20 points as Marquette topped Providence 79-69 on Tuesday night. Koby McEwen had 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists for  Marquette (7-6, 3-4 Big East Conference). D.J. Carton added 13 points. Jamal Cain had 12 points.  Nate Watson had 18 points for the Friars (7-6, 3-4). David Duke added 17 points and nine assists. A.J. Reeves had 12 points.

In the NBA tonight Milwaukee is at Detroit.  The Bucs (7-4) are tied for third in the Eastern Conference while the Pistons  (2-8) are last in the East.  Milwaukee has won two straight against Detroit this season.t

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will guest host on an episode of Jeopardy. No. 12 let the cat out of the bag Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show, announcing he would guest host the long-running trivia show.  It’s not clear when Rodgers will host. Packers fans will have to watch for an announcement from Jeopardy! In 2015, Rodgers won $50,000 for charity on Celebrity Jeopardy! He defeated Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary and astronaut and current Sen. Mark Kelly. Rodgers donated the money to the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer. Jeopardy! is employing guest hosts until they choose a permanent replacement for the late Alex Trebek. Trebek passed away Nov. 8, 2020, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
