Sports for January 12th

Ohio State had no answer for Alabama’s offense. Najee Harris and DeVonta Smith each scored three touchdowns as the Crimson Tide rolled up over 600 yards of offense in a 52-24 win over the Buckeyes.

The win gives Alabama (13-0) its sixth national title under coach Nick Saban and its third in the College Football Playoff era. Alabama’s championships after the 2015, 2017 and 2020 seasons are the most of any school since the playoff’s formation. Clemson, with titles after the 2016 and 2018 seasons, is the only other school with multiple playoff championship

Smith, the 2020 Heisman winner and first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since 1991, did most of his damage in the first half. He had 12 catches for 215 yards as he outscored (18-17) and outgained (215-190) the Buckeyes himself in the first two quarters. He left the game in the third quarter after he appeared to injured a finger on his right hand just after halftime. He was taken to the locker room after lengthy treatment on the sideline and returned halfway through the fourth quarter without his uniform and his right hand wrapped up.

Saban now has seven national titles — he was the coach of LSU’s 2003 national championship team as well. No coach has ever won more claimed or official national titles than Saban. He entered Monday night’s game tied with Alabama legend Bear Bryant for the most titles of any college coach.

Giannis Antetokounmpo returned from a one-game absence because of a minor back injury and scored 22 points as the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Orlando Magic 121-99 on Monday night. Antetokounmpo, the reigning two-time NBA MVP, started slowly and battled through second-half foul trouble before coming alive in the fourth quarter. Milwaukee won a second straight and beat Orlando for a fifth consecutive time in the regular season. Khris Middleton finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, while reserve Bobby Portis played well for a second straight game, scoring 20 points.  Bryn Forbes added 14 points and three 3s for Milwaukee, which shot 50.5% from the floor.  Nikola Vucevic had 28 points and 13 rebounds to lead the short-handed Magic, who have lost three straight since Markelle Fultz was lost to a season-ending knee injury. Aaron Gordon had 21 points, eight assists and five rebounds and contributed solid defense against Antetokounmpo.

The Bucks are at Detroit on Wednesday. The Bucks are 2-0 already against the Pistons.

In men’s college basketball tonight, 9th ranked  Wisconsin is at 7th  ranked Michigan. The Badgers are 10-2 while the Wolverines are 10-0.

The Packers are back on the practice field for the next three days.  Green Bay hosts the Los Angeles Rams Saturday afternoon in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.  Tipoff  is at 3:35 and can be heard on FM 102.3, The Bug.

Green Bay Packers season ticket holders will get the chance to buy tickets for Saturday’s playoff game starting Tuesday morning. Previously, the team said 6,000 seats would be sold to the Divisional Round game against the Rams. Each season ticket holder who opted in will get to purchase as many as six tickets, with seats being sold in pods of 2, 4, or 6. Gonzaga and Baylor were the top two teams in The Associated Press preseason men’s college basketball poll. After eight weeks of twists and turns, that hasn’t changed.

The Zags received 63 of 64 first-place votes from a national media panel in the poll released Monday and the Bears had the other one. Villanova, Texas and Iowa rounded out a top 5 that remained the same from last week.

No. 9 Wisconsin fell one spot after a double-overtime win over Indiana.

Heisman Trophy Winner  Carson Palmer  and former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops are among the 13 former players and coaches who make up the latest College Football Hall of Fame class.

The National Football Foundation announced the newly elected hall of famers Monday. This class will be inducted in December.

Joining Palmer and Stoops will be versatile running backs Darren Sproles of Kansas State and C.J Spiller of Clemson; offensive tackles Harris Barton of North Carolina and Aaron Taylor of Notre Dame, a former Green Bay Packers player; defensive stars David Fulcher of Arizona State, Dan Morgan of Miami; Kenneth Sims of Texas; Andre Tippett of Iowa and Al Wilson of Tennessee. Burlington, Wisconsin, native, former Eastern Illinois quarterback and current CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo was also selected for induction along with former Florida A&M coach Rudy Hubbard.

Palmer won the Heisman in 2002 for the Trojans and then went on to be the first overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Stoops coached Oklahoma from 1999-2016, leading the Sooners to their last national championship in 2000. Oklahoma went to two more BCS title games with Stoops and won 10 Big 12 championships.

He is the sixth Oklahoma coach to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, including Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer.  Stoops and Tippett were teammates on the Iowa’s Big Ten championship team in 1981.

The winning coach of Super Bowl LII is out of a job. The Philadelphia Eagles have fired Doug Pederson, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday.

Pederson led the Eagles to the franchise’s first Lombardi Trophy in 2017, coaching Philadelphia to a 13-3 finish and an unlikely run to the Super Bowl with backup quarterback Nick Foles. His pairing with Carson Wentz seemed to set the Eagles up for a very prosperous future following their Super Bowl triumph, but the wheels fell off in 2020.

Wentz regressed significantly, going from a quarterback with a passer rating above 98 to below average at 72.8. The Eagles spiraled to a 4-11-1 finish, with Pederson growing frustrated well before the midway point of the season.. Pederson exits Philadelphia with an overall mark of 42-37-1 in five seasons, making three straight playoff appearances from 2017-2019 before slipping to the cellar of the NFC East in 2020. He hadn’t won 10-plus games since the Eagles’ run to Super Bowl LII, winning nine or fewer games in four of his five seasons in Philadelphia.
