Sports for January 7th

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 25 points and Khris Middleton added 23 as the Milwaukee Bucks rolled past the Detroit Pistons 130-115 on Wednesday night for their third straight victory.  This marked the second time in three nights that the Bucks and Pistons have faced off in Milwaukee. The Bucks (5-3) beat the Pistons 125-115 on Monday and have now won their last nine regular-season meetings with Detroit. The Pistons (1-7) had fallen by 10 points or fewer in each of their first six losses but never had much of a chance in this one. Milwaukee (5-3) was ahead 82-56 at halftime and led by as many as 34 in the third quarter and coasted to the win. Detroit’s Jerami Grant had 31 points to lead all scorers. The Bucks improved to 4-0 at home, where they’re outscoring teams by an average margin of 23.5 points. The Bucks finish their current five-game home stretch by hosting Utah on Friday and Cleveland on Saturday. Brook Lopez scored 17 points, Bobby Portis had 16, rookie Jordan Nwora provided 11 and Jrue Holiday added 10 for the Bucks. Saddiq Bey scored 20 points, Wayne Ellington 12 and Derrick Rose 10 for the Pistons. Rose left the game early with a bruised right knee. Milwaukee hosts Utah Saturday night.

Courtney Shaw and Veronica Burton each had 15 points and nine rebounds, and No. 22 Northwestern beat Wisconsin 80-55 on Wednesday. Northwestern took its first double-digit lead during a 10-0 run in the second quarter. Burton and Laya Hartman each made a 3-pointer during a closing 9-0 run for a 23-point halftime lead, and the Wildcats led by at least 20 points for the entire second half. Lindsey Pulliam and Sydney Wood scored 14 points apiece for Northwestern (5-2, 3-2 Big Ten). Shaw was 6 of 7 from the field to reach a new career high in scoring. Jordan Hamilton had eight assists and Wood blocked three shots. Burton and Wood each had four steals, and Hamilton added three as Northwestern used 17 takeaways to score 23 points off of turnovers. Freshman Kate Thompson had a team-high nine points for Wisconsin (3-5, 0-5). It was the first of four straight ranked opponents for the Badgers, including No. 19 Indiana on Friday.

In Men’s college basketball action tonight, Indiana (7-4) is at #8 Wisconsin (9-2). The Badgers play at #10 Michigan on Sunday.

The NFL Wild Card round of the playoffs starts Saturday. Indianapolis is at Buffalo, Los Angeles Rams at Seattle and Tampa Bay at Washington.

On Sunday…Baltimore is  at Tennessee, Chicago at New Orleans and Cleveland is at Pittsburgh.
