Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Thursday morning that former general manager Ted Thompson has died. He was 68.
“Just want to say our condolences go out to his family,” said LaFleur. “Certainly he’s a guy that is held in the highest regard in this building and, I think, just around the league he’s had a tremendous impact. Not only on people in this building, obviously Gutey and a lot of our personnel people, but people in other departments as well.”
Thompson moved out of the general manager position in January 2018 when they hired Brian Gutekunst, who worked as a scout under Thompson, to replace him. In 2019 Thompson revealed that he was suffering from an autonomic disorder. Thompson had been general manager since 2005. He was the architect of the team that won Super Bowl XLV five years later. Thompson’s first draft choice was quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is a leading contender for the NFL MVP award this year. He was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2019.
LeBron James says the results of last season’s NBA awards voting didn’t provide extra motivation as his Los Angeles Lakers prepared to face Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. He had more important things on his mind. James scored a season-high 34 points in the opener of a seven-game road trip, helping the Lakers beat the Bucks 113-106 on Thursday. He finished second to Antetokounmpo in last year’s MVP balloting. Los Angeles (12-4) bounced back after blowing a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter of a 115-113 loss to Golden State on Monday night. The Bucks (9-6) dropped their second straight. The Lakers shot 19 of 37 from 3-point range, with James going 6 of 10 and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope making 7 of 10. Caldwell-Pope had 23 points. Gianni Antetokounmpo had 25 points and 12 rebounds for Milwaukee, but he also committed nine turnovers. Jrue Holiday scored 22 points for the Bucks, and Khris Middleton finished with 20. The Bucks host the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday before going on a three-game road swing.
The Packers continue to get ready for Sunday’s NFC Championship game at Lambeau Field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Packers listed 11 players for the second straight day on their injury list but the only one who didn’t practice was tight end Mercedes Lewis, who’s nursing a knee injury. Safety Will Redmond, who was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice saw limited action Thursday. He also has a knee injury. Sunday’s game matches two future Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers the Bucs Tom Brady. The Packers will be trying to avenge an embarrassing 38-19 loss at Tampa Bay in week six. Green Bay currently has a seven-game win streak. The Packers are hoping their defense can pressure Brady and get some sacks. Green Bay is also hoping to get a big contribution offensively from running backs Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams and A.J. Dillon. After reports Wednesday circulated the Packers signed CB Tramon Williams, the team made it official Thursday by signing Williams to the practice squad and releasing P Ryan Winslow.
Williams has made two other stops with the Packers (2007-14, 2018-19) and was a key player on the team that captured the Super Bowl in the 2010 season. Williams played this season with the Ravens and was waived Monday. He has also played for the Browns (2015-16) and Cardinals (2017).
