Ballweg On Capitol Protests
State Senator Joan Ballweg says she watched some of the preparations this week at the State Capitol for possible protestors connected with nationwide protests over the Presidential Election results. She says plywood was being put up over windows and there was a visible presence of National Guard troops. The state lawmaker from Markesan says she understands the right to protest, but doesn’t support the type of vandalism and physical violence that went on in Washington D.C. “I believe that, we all agree, that property damage and especially personal injury are beyond our 1st Amendment rights.” Ballweg represented the 41st State Assembly District during the ACT 10 protests in Madison. She recalls protestors in the hallways and on the scene, but she says the damage they caused was limited to wear and tear from so many people being in the building.
Battling COVID Not Easy
Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul returned home last week after spending 32 days at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center battling COVID-19. He was congratulated by doctors and nurses as he left the medical center and there was a parade of fire trucks and law enforcement vehicles past his home when he got there. Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says anyone who thinks we’d be better off building herd immunity to the virus by just contracting it wouldn’t want to experience what Chief Saul did. “It sounds like it was touch and go for a while. It sounds like it is still of great concern and we’re all certainly not only thinking of him, but all the people high-visibility and low-visibility that are struggling through this.”
Stimulus Debit Cards Mistaken For Scam
People receiving their stimulus money are being urged to take a closer look at their mail if they get what looks like a debit or credit card. The IRS says about 8 million people will receive their payments in debit cards mailed to their homes. The Visa debit cards look like a regular credit card with the stars of the American flag featured on the front. Others will get checks in the mail. The AARP reports some of its members mistakenly tossed out the debit cards after mistaking the payment method as a scam.
Sheriff On Shelter Fundraiser
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says it was kind of fun to let their hair down so to speak when deputies used “No Shave November and Double Down December” to grow beards and goatees for a good cause. For a second straight year they paid $50 each to grow the facial hair. This year the St. Katharine Drexel Homeless Shelter will benefit from the funds. Waldschmidt says it will be a year-round shelter for the homeless, which they don’t have in Fond du Lac right now. “This new shelter will have an area for men, an area for women and an area actually for families. Different wings basically of this new shelter and it will be year round serving the needs basically of anyone that qualifies for it. So it will be a great option to help serve the homeless.” The shelter was chosen because homelessness is an issue both patrol and jail deputies see and work with all too often. Organizers for the shelter were presented with a check for $3,600 raised from the growing of beards this winter. The shelter will be built near the St. Vincent de Paul store in Fond du Lac.

Iola Car Show Being Organized
Organizers for the Iola Car Show and Swap Meet are busy preparing for this July’s 49th annual event. Last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Car Show and Swap Meet will include over 4,000 swap spaces, 2,500 plus show cars, over 1,000 cars for sale, and more than 1,600 campsites are being prepped for the second weekend in July. In place of the car show last year organizers held the Rally for Iola, which involved a 75-mile cruise that had participants pay $15 for an entry fee.
