FDL Man Found Incompetent To Stand Trial
A 27-year-old Fond du Lac man suspected of intentionally hitting and killing a motorcyclist with his father’s pickup truck last July is being committed to the Mendota Mental Health facility for inpatient treatment. During a competency hearing in Fond du Lac County court this week Dr. Nancy Elliot testified Daniel Navarro is not competent, but is likely to regain competency to stand trial. He is charged in the death of 55-year-old Phillip Thiessen of Fond du Lac who died at the scene of the crash on Winnebago Drive. According to the criminal complaint Navarro felt he was a victim of racism and was targeted because he was Mexican. Navarro in turn said he picked hitting a motorcycle because he believed the person driving the motorcycle was white and in Wisconsin white people drive motorcycles and the Harley climate is made up of white racists.
Victim Of Fatal Dodge County Crash Identified
The victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash in Dodge County Tuesday has been identified. Seventeen-year-old Wilhelm Rist of Randolph was taken to the UW-Hospital in Madison where he died. Sheriff’s officials say Rist was driving a Chevy Impala on State Highway 73 in the Town of Calamus and was negotiating a curve when his vehicle spun and crossed over the centerline into the path of a straight truck. The driver of the truck was not injured. It was Dodge County’s first fatal traffic accident of the New Year.
Oshkosh Man Pleads To Former Police Captain’s Murder
The 29-year-old Oshkosh man suspected of murdering a retired Oshkosh Police Captain has pleaded no contest to a first degree reckless homicide charge. In return for the plea a battery charge against Ian Suzuki was read into the record but dismissed. Charges against him stemmed from the stabbing death of 67-year-old Jay Puestohl on February 2nd of last year. Suzuki was a guest in his mother’s home and had a history of mental health issues. When Puestohl tried to kick him out of the home the two got into a fight. Suzuki went to the kitchen and got a knife and stabbed Puestohl in the neck. Suzuki will be sentenced in Winnebago County court on March 8th.
Portage Boy Threatens To Shoot Fellow Student
A 15-year-old Portage boy is facing a possible felony charge of terrorist threats after allegedly threatening to bring a firearm to school to use against another student. Columbia County Sheriff’s officials learned from the Columbia Marquette Adolescent Needs School located in the Town of Fort Winnebago about the threat. A group of students had an inappropriate chat on a social media app and a parent of one of the students pointed that out to those involved in the chat group. Following that the Portage boy made threats of bodily harm to the child of the confronting parent, the parent, and the child’s family. The threat of taking a weapon to school followed and the 15-year-old reportedly sent a picture of a firearm to the other student after the threats were made. Sheriff’s deputies took the threatening teen into custody and he was placed in a secure juvenile detention facility. The terrorist threats charge was referred to the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.
Congressman Grothman On DC Riot
Congressman Glenn Grothman says it would be wrong to make a blanket statement blaming Trump supporters for the violence and damage at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. The federal lawmaker was in his office social distancing from the discussion about certification of the Presidential Election when rioters stormed the Capitol. He believes some of the crowd was just there to create havoc and cause damage and had nothing to do with supporting President Trump. “Very disappointing I think some people were egging on the protestors. I think some people came here who were not necessarily pro-Trumpers they were just the type of anarchist who like to take advantage of a situation and break things.” Grothman says he knows some people were just in town to cause trouble because he spotted a few of them the night before the rioting at the Capitol hassling a jogger. He notes a given number of people are naturally violent and they have showed up in places like Minneapolis and Kenosha just to get into a fight.

Two Doses Of COVID Vaccine Needed
A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force is hoping a story about the possibility of people only getting one of the two doses of vaccine needed is only speculation. A story this past week talked about that possibility with Moderna’s new vaccine, but Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says he can’t see that happening because there was no testing to support it. “But now if they are going to go outside the science and outside the data and say well I wonder if one dose will work pretty well for twice as many people instead of two doses for half as many people that is irresponsible until there is any testing done with that and testing within in a controlled setting.” He likens it to only taking half of needed heart medication to keep you alive. The two doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccine are administered 21 to 28 days apart.
Ripon Chamber Of Commerce Positive Outlook For The New Year
It’s a New Year for the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce and officials are emphasizing the positive as we shake off a year dominated by the pandemic and its effects on business. Chamber Executive Director Jason Mansmith says they hope to have a full schedule of events that people can look forward to. “Hopefully have a full slate of events for you this year and we will see how that plays out. But for the most part things are going well for us. We had a good November/December and we have had a lot of people in town supporting and shopping locally and doing good things and making it a good atmosphere.” He says despite the cancellation of many Dickens of a Christmas events last month a lot of people still got out to Christmas shop and support local businesses.
