Sports for December 17th
The Packers held a walk-thru on Wednesday as they prepare for Saturday night’s matchup with the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field. Tight end Jace Sternberger is still going through concussion protocol and did not participate. Green Bay (10-3) clinched the NFC North last Sunday and currently is the number one seed in the NFC playoff picture. In all four of their appearances in the NFC Championship Game with Aaron Rodgers, the Packers have not had a home game, something Rodgers wants to end this year. Also, Rodgers is neck-and-neck with Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes in a bid for a third MVP award. Saturday night’s game starts at 7:15 and can be heard on FM 102.3, The Bug.
In Thursday Night Football, the Los Angeles Chargers (4-9) are on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders (7-6).
The NFL’s agreed-upon new schedule format with a 17th regular-season game is not yet a
reality, but will become one if and when the league deems it appropriate.
While the league’s owners did not vote to add a 17th game to the 2021 regular season during Wednesday’s virtual meeting, they did agree to procedures for a 17th regular-season game for each of the 32 clubs if and when the NFL adds such a 17th game to the schedule, essentially giving the owners’ collective approval in advance for such a change. The agreement was finalized in a resolution obtained by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Wednesday. New scheduling procedures with respect to the 17th regular-season game will “be an interconference match-up based on divisional standings” from the previous campaign, and “on a rotating divisional basis” in a fashion similar to current scheduling standards that annually see one AFC division play an entire NFC division, and so on. This change should mean the football-viewing world will see more marquee matchups across conferences that would traditionally be limited by the annual interconference divisional rotations.
The Oshkosh Area School District will allow limited fans at high school winter sports events. The district will allow two family members per student-athlete to attend home games. There will be no admission fee. Family members should check in with coaches for details. Tickets will not be available to the public. Family members will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing in the stands. No food or beverage carry-ins will be allowed. There will be no concessions at the games. Family members are asked to arrive no more than 15 minutes before the start of the game. They will have to leave right after the game. “This decision was made after careful consideration, review of COVID-19 safety protocols, and conversations with the Winnebago County Health Department,” reads a statement from the district. Oshkosh schools will continue to stream athletics events online. CLICK HERE for more information on the live streams.
