The Green Bay Packers can become NFC North champions for the second consecutive season by Sunday night. The division-leading Packers will win the NFC North if they beat the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If one or both of those scenarios don’t occur, there are three regular season weeks left to determine a division winner. The Packers (9-3) enter Week 14 play with a three-game lead over the second place Vikings (6-6) in the division.
In the AFC, the Pittsburgh Steelers can secure an AFC North championship next Monday with a win against the Buffalo Bills and a Cleveland Browns’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens. And while the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs clinched a playoff berth last week, they can win the AFC West with a victory or tie against the Miami Dolphins or a Las Vegas Raiders’ loss or tie to the Indianapolis Colts. While a division championship means at least one home playoff game, the coronavirus pandemic could result in this season’s games being played in empty or near-empty stadiums. The Packers announced Tuesday that an attendance approach to potential playoff games would be decided at a later date.
Kickoff is set for 3:25 Sunday. You can hear all of the action beginning with the pregame at 1:00 on 102.3FM, WAUH.
In Thursday Night Football, New England plays the Rams in Los Angeles. The Patriots are 6-6 while the Rams are 8-4.
Brad Davison scored 23 points, and No. 13 Wisconsin beat Rhode Island 73-62 on Wednesday in a nonconference game added to the schedule two days ago. Wisconsin (4-1) originally was slated to host No. 25 Louisville on Wednesday as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, but the Cardinals canceled their second consecutive game following a positive COVID-19 test within the program. Rhode Island was added as a replacement on Monday. Wisconsin took a 53-31 lead on Jonathan Davis’ turnaround jumper with 11:58 remaining, but the Rams closed to 62-54 on a 3-pointer by Jeremy Sheppard with 4:40 left. Michah Potter had 13 points and Aleem Ford scored 11 for Wisconsin, which bounced back from a 67-65 loss to Marquette on a buzzer-beating tip-in of a missed free throw on Friday. Sheppard had 13 points for the Rams (3-3), who had won three straight. The Badgers gained control early, breaking out to a 33-16 halftime lead. The cold-shooting Rams were 7 of 27 in the first half. Davison, who was 0 for 4 and missed all three shots from beyond the arc against Marquette, hit three 3-pointers in the early going to stake Wisconsin to a 10-2 lead. The Badgers pushed the lead to 21-8 on Nate Reuver’s inside turnaround with 9:01 left in the half. Barring schedule changes, the Badgers have one nonconference game remaining before opening Big Ten play at home against Nebraska on Dec. 21.
Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t saying whether he plans to sign the Milwaukee Bucks’ supermax contract extension offer. The Bucks were able to offer a five-year deal worth over $220 million.
“My agent and Jon Horst are talking about it. They’re having lunch, dinner, brunch, whatever they’re having and Bucks ownership are talking about it. I’m just trying to focus on playing basketball, “said Antetokounmpo.
He did praise the Bucks’ offseason moves to upgrade the team and called them “amazing.” Antetokounmpo has until Dec. 21 to sign the extension. He’s eligible to become a free agent after the upcoming season if he doesn’t sign. Antetokounmpo says he’s focusing on basketball and is letting his agent handle any contract discussions.
LSU will forgo participating in a bowl game this season, adding to the list of self-imposed sanctions stemming from the NCAA’s investigation into improper booster payments to its football players. The school announced the self-imposed bowl ban on Wednesday night. LSU, which is 3-5 with two games remaining on its schedule, could have finished the regular season under .500 and still been eligible to participate in a bowl game because the NCAA waived bowl eligibility requirements this season in order to provide greater flexibility during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ESPN reported last month that LSU had self-imposed a loss of eight scholarships over two years; a reduction in recruiting visits, evaluations and communication; and a ban of Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. from its football facilities for two years. LSU’s football program is charged with a Level III violation involving Beckham, a former Tigers star, who gave $2,000 in cash to four Tigers football players on the field after the team’s 42-25 victory over Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship game on Jan. 13.
