The Packers, who already have clinched the NFC North title, will try to take one more step toward earning that No. 1 seed when they host the slumping Carolina Panthers (4-9) on Saturday night. Green Bay has a straight forward path to the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. Win their final three regular-season games, the Packers (10-3) have the opportunity to earn a Super Bowl berth without leaving Lambeau Field. Green Bay has lost on the road in three of the past six NFC championship games. The conference’s top seed only has to win two playoff games at home to make it to the Super Bowl. The Packers, who already have clinched the NFC North title, will try to take one more step toward earning that No. 1 seed when they host the slumping Carolina Panthers (4-9) on Saturday night. The Packers and Saints (10-3) share the same record, but Green Bay owns a tiebreaker advantage after winning at New Orleans on Sept. 27. Green Bay has won three straight thanks in part to the potent passing combination of Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers. Adams has 14 touchdown catches to tie Kansas City’s Tyreek Hill for first place among all NFL players. Rodgers has thrown an NFL-leading 39 touchdown passes. Rodgers will be facing a Carolina defense that has struggled lately against lesser quarterbacks as the Panthers have dropped six of their past seven games. Rodgers is hoping to win his third MVP.
The Panthers are coming off a 32-27 loss to Denver in which they allowed Drew Lock to throw for 280 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Two weeks earlier, Carolina fell 28-27 to Minnesota as Kirk Cousins threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns without getting picked off. Three of the Panthers’ past four losses have been decided by a total of eight points. In seven of Carolina’s losses, the Panthers had the ball late in the fourth quarter with a chance to win or send the game into overtime. Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, their star running back, is doubtful with a thigh injury. Green Bay tight end Jace Sternberger (concussion) and guard Simon Stepaniak (knee) are out and wide receiver Malik Taylor (hsmstring) is questionable. The pregame starts 5:00 tomorrow night with the kickoff at 7:15 and can be heard on FM 102.3, The Bug.
In Thursday Night Football, the Los Angeles Chargers won on the road, beating the Las Vegas Raiders 30-27 in overtime. Rookie Chargers first round pick Justin Herbert scored the winning touchdown and also threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 27 for season and tying him with Baker Mayfield for the most touchdown passes in a rookie season. Marcus Mariotta replaced an injured Derek Carr at quarterback for the Raiders and was also impressive. He passed for 226 yards and a touchdown along with an interception.
In college football on Saturday, the Wisconsin Badgers (2-3) play at Minnesota (3-3). The Badgers are favored to win.
In college basketball, the Badgers host Louisville on Saturday. Wisconsin is (4-1) is ranked 12th while the Cardinals are 4-0 and ranked 23rd.
About 250 additional fans will be in attendance at Saturday night’s Green Bay Packers game against the Carolina Panthers. The team is extending an invitation to its health care and public safety partners. The invitation is a thank you and a show of appreciation for these frontline workers during the pandemic. Employees from Bellin Health, the Green Bay Police Department, the Green Bay Metro Fire Department, Ashwaubenon Public Safety, and the Brown County Sheriff’s Office will join the Packers’ invited employees and their immediate families who’ve attended the past two home games. Including Packers employees and their immediate families, the organization anticipates between 700 and 800 fans will be in the stands Saturday night. In adherence to Lambeau Field protocols, fans will sit in socially distanced pods. The Packers organization says it will continue to evaluate its game-day attendance during the pandemic for the final home game as well as the anticipated home playoff game.
The Green Bay Packers are honoring the legacy of a former player with an impact grant to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The team is giving $250,000 toward the establishment of the Willie Davis Financial Trading and Investment Laboratory within the university’s Cofrin School of Business. Davis passed away in April of 2020, following a brief illness.
“This is a wonderful tribute to Willie. He was a Hall of Fame player who became a great businessman and entrepreneur,” said Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy. “Willie will always be tied to one of the greatest football dynasties, the Vince Lombardi era. Willie learned valuable, life long lessons from Coach Lombardi, and applied these lessons to all aspects of his life. Willie would be very proud to know that his legacy will promote financial literacy and help good students become great.”
The Willie Davis Financial Trading and Investment Laboratory will provide students with financial and research data feeds, analytics and simulation platforms for financial trading portfolio management, stock tracking, trading and more.
