Dalvin Cook gained 226 yards from scrimmage and became the first Viking in over four decades to score four touchdowns in a single game as Minnesota defeated the Green Bay Packers 28-22 on Sunday. On a blustery day at Lambeau Field, with winds gusting up to 40, the Packers defense didn’t have much of an answer for Cook, who rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns and caught three passes for 63 yards and another score. With his 163 yards on the ground Cook joined Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Adrian Peterson as the only players with multiple 150 yard rushing games against the Packers in their careers.
It started well for Green Bay as they took the opening kickoff and scored first on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams that culminated in a 13-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:59 off the clock. But the Vikings came back with a 10-play, 78 yard drive of their own with Cook taking it up the middle for the final 21yards to make it 7-7. On the Packers next drive, they marched 76-yards in 15 plays and Rodgers hit Adams again from a yard out to take a 14-7 lead. The number of plays, 15, and the 8:54 off the clock were the longest this season for Green Bay. But the Vikings came back on their next possession and tied it in the second quarter at 14, after Cook scored from a yard out to make it 14-14 at the half.
Minnesota then scored on the opening drive of the third quarter as Cook scored again from a yard out and then quarterback Kirk Cousins connected with Cook on a short pass that ended up as 50-yard touchdown and the Vikings led 28-14 at the end of three quarters. Green Bay finally scored their third touchdown on 7-yard scoring toss to Adams and a 2-point conversion by Jamaal Williams to make it 28-22. Green Bay had one final chance late but Rodgers was hit and fumbled and the Vikings ran out the clock.
Rodgers ended up completing 27 of 41 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns, all to Davante Adams who caught 7 passes for 53 yards. Tight end Robert Tonyan caught 5 passes for 79 yards. Jamaal Williams led the ground game with 75 yards on 16 carries.
Cousins was efficient, completing 11 of 14 for 160 yards and a touchdown. Cook gained 163 of the Vikings 173 rushing yards and also caught two passes for 63 yards.
Minnesota improves to 2-5 in the Northern Division while Green Bay falls to 5-2. The Packers play at San Francisco Thursday night. The 49ers lost at Seattle Sunday 37-27 and are 4-4.
In the NFC North, the Bears (5-3) lost at home in overtime to the Saints, 26-23 while the Lions lost at home to Indianapolis 41-21.
Last night the Eagles won at home over the Cowboys 23-9 and tonight Tampa Bay plays on the road against the Giants.
Herb Adderley, the Hall of Fame cornerback who joined the NFL as a running back and became part of a record six championship teams with the Packers and Cowboys, has died. He was 81. His death was confirmed on Twitter on Friday by nephew Nasir Adderley, a safety for the Los Angeles Chargers. No details were given. He called his uncle a “unique soul who has had such an incredible influence on my life.”
Herb Adderley played in four of the first six Super Bowls and won five NFL championships with Green Bay and one with Dallas during his 12-year career. Along with former teammates Fuzzy Thurston and Forrest Gregg, Adderley is one of three players in pro football history to play on six championship teams. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.
Chase Elliott cruised to an impressive 6.577-second victory over Ryan Blaney on Sunday in the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway — earning a position in next week’s NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 season finale.
Equally as dramatic was a failed last-lap pass for position that eliminated the regular-season champion and nine-race winner Kevin Harvick from advancing to that final round. Harvick had to pass 2019 series champ Kyle Busch for one position — one point — to be able to advance to next week’s title race and instead the cars crashed after making contact. Harvick ended up 17th, eight points shy of a playoff berth.
With his victory, Elliott, 24, of Hendrick Motorsports, joins Team Penske’s Joey Logano, who advanced to the title race with a victory two weeks ago at Kansas. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, a seven-race winner, raced his way into the Championship 4 with an 11th-place finish at Martinsville, and Logano’s Team Penske teammate Brad Keselowski, who finished fourth Sunday, was the final driver to earn a championship opportunity.
On the PGA Tour, Brian Gay defeated Wyndham Clark in a playoff Sunday to win the Bermuda Championship.
