Ripon School District Officials Appreciate Referendum Support
Ripon Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says they are grateful for the high turnout and the support of Ripon School District voters during last week’s vote on the operational referendum. Voters supported allowing the district to exceed its revenue cap by $500,000 a year for six years, basically continuing what two previous referendums allowed the district to do. Whitrock says with revenue caps in place the district only receives funding from the state for $9,800 per student, while some districts receive as much at $18,000 per student. “It’s so critical to the healthy running of our school district because our revenues were locked in back in the 1990’s and we are only allowed to grow based on that position.” She says the extra funding will be spent on technology, curriculum materials, and building maintenance. Whitrock notes their website has more information on how that money will be spent for each year of the referendum.
Promising Vaccine For COVID
A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says it’s encouraging to hear that Pfizer has developed a possible vaccine for the coronavirus. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says in a blind test 43,000 people received a placebo or the vaccine and in those who got the vaccine there was a high success rate. “They are showing 90 percent effectiveness, which is on the level of measles and polio vaccines which pretty much were eradicated. So this is incredibly promising.” He says it is late in the testing and there is still peer review and other steps before it is approved for distribution. Puhlmann-Becker says after that people will need to get two doses of the vaccine for it to be effective and refrigeration for its storage may be an issue for some countries.
