Deer Harvest Numbers Up Opening Weekend

According to the Department of Natural Resources the deer harvest over the opening weekend of the 9-day gun-deer hunt was up 2.25 percent over last year. In hard numbers 95,257 deer were taken compared to 93,155 last year and of this year’s harvest so far there were 49,025 bucks compared with 48,252 last year. There were four accidental shootings opening weekend one of them fatal. A 62-year-old man in Washburn County and 14-year-old boy in Saint Croix County were accidentally shot by hunters in deer drives. Both of those shootings were on Saturday. On Sunday a 40-year-old man in Adams County was wounded working the slide on his pistol when it discharged into his left hand and a 65-year-old man was killed in Door County when he tripped exiting his blind and his shotgun went off hitting him in the chest.
