Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst isn’t discussing quarterback Graham Mertz’s status following reports that the redshirt freshman has tested positive for COVID-19. Chryst did say he was confident the ninth-ranked Badgers’ game Saturday at Nebraska would go on as scheduled. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal both reported that Mertz had tested positive. Big Ten protocols say that athletes who test positive through point-of-contact daily testing must take a polymerase chain reaction test to confirm the first result. The athlete can’t play again for at least 21 days if the PCR test confirms the first result.
It’s game six of the World Series tonight in Arlington, Texas where the Los Angeles Dodgers can wrap it up against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers lead in the best-of-seven-game series 3-2 after a 4-2 victory Sunday night. Tampa Bay sends left-hander Blake Snell (2-2) against Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin (0-2). First pitch is at 7:08 CDT. If the Rays tie the series up, then game seven is Wednesday night.
The Packers are off today following a convincing 35-20 road win over the Houston Texans Sunday. Aaron Rodgers returned to form throwing four touchdown passes, two to wide receiver Davante Adams. The week before against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he had been intercepted twice and did not throw a touchdown pass in the 38-10 Bucs win at home. This week the Packers host the 1-5 Minnesota Vikings who are coming off their bye week.
In Monday Night Football the Los Angeles Rams won at home over the Chicago Bears 24-10 as two-top seven defenses clashed. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey had two interceptions and defensive lineman Aaron Donald was dominant against the Bears offensive line. Quarterback Nick Foles was sacked four times, two by former Bear Leonard Floyd and Chicago was unable to score an offensive touchdown and the Bears were limited to just 49 yards on the ground. Rams quarterback Jared Goff was efficient, hitting 23 of 33 passes to 219 yards and two touchdowns and Los Angeles rushed for over 150 yards. The Bears drop to 5-2 a game behind the Packers in the NFC North while the Rams improve to 5-2, tied for second in the NFC West.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s season is officially over. The Cleveland Browns announced the star wide receiver suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. Beckham underwent an MRI on Monday morning, which confirmed the tear. He was injured on the Browns’ second snap Sunday while attempting to chase down a Cincinnati Bengals defender following a Baker Mayfield interception.
When the Dallas Cowboys practice Wednesday, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan might be on the injury report. The reason? Tabasco. Nolan had to step away from his weekly conference call with reporters on Monday because he got some hot sauce in his eye in the middle of answering a question about the effectiveness of pass-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence. The Cowboys are on pace to allow 555 points this season. They have given up 243 points, which is more than they have given up in 11 seasons in franchise history, not counting the strike season in 1982, and equal to what they allowed in 1992. Nolan was able to clean out his eye and return to the news conference.
