The Packers returned to practice Wednesday getting ready for the game in Houston Sunday against the Texans. Coach Matt LaFleur put the Packers through a lighter, shorter, practice with more above-the-shoulders mental work because there were a number of players unable to participate due to injuries.
LT David Bakhtiari was held out with his chest injury. RB/KR Tyler Ervin, DL Tyler Lancaster, S Darnell Savage, and TE Robert Tonyan were all held out as well.
In Houston Sunday, Green Bay will have another reunion with former teammate Randall Cobb. The WR is revered by his former teammates. Cobb has already scored twice this season, and Aaron Rodgers knew Cobb was going to be good when the receiver had 2 touchdowns in his very first game as a pro.
The Packers are hoping to bounce back in Houston on Sunday, playing a Texans team that has already fired its coach and is off to a 1-5 start. Green Bay has made a habit of bouncing back so far under LaFleur with no back-to-back losses yet through nearly one and a half seasons.
Rodgers threw six-touchdown passes the last time the Packers played in Houston but Green Bay’s last date with Romeo Crennel (the Texans interim head coach) was not something to remember. In 2011, Crennel was in his first game as interim coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. The packers were 13-0. And then they weren’t. With a 19-14 loss. LaFleur has immense respect for Crennel, and the Texans franchise. Houston is where LaFleur got his NFL start as an offensive assistant in 2008. And he understands this Texans team is better than its 1-5 record. When asked if teams were starting to figure him out, Rodgers said one in five are, referring to the Packers 4-1 record. He also said he won’t prepare differently for Sunday’s game after throwing two interceptions against Tampa Bay, saying he prepares the same way for each game.
Tampa Bay evened up the World Series at a game apiece last night with a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Brandon Lowe hammered two home runs for the Rays and their relievers preserved the win. Lowe entered the game just 6-56 this postseason. His first homer — a solo shot off Tony Gonsolin in the first — set the tone. And his second — a two-run opposite-field blast on a Dustin May curveball in the top of the fifth — gave the Rays a commanding 5-0 edge. Meanwhile Rays starter Blake Snell went 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on two hits whiles striking out nine and walking four. Nick Anderson replaced him in the fifth and gave up one run in 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win and Diego Castillo picked up the save.
Tony Gonsolin (who was a “starter” in name only, was lifted after four outs and took the loss. Gonsolin combined with Dylan Floro, Victor González and Dustin May to allow five runs. All told, the Dodgers used seven pitchers. The teams are off today before resuming the series on Friday.
In Thursday Night Football, the Giants (1-5) play at Philadelphia against the Eagles who are 1-4-1. Both teams are very much alive in a very weak NFC East as Dallas leads the division with a 2-4 record.
The Wautoma girls’ cross country team advanced on Tuesday in their sub sectional with a victory at Poynette. They will travel to Winneconne on Saturday to compete in the sectional finals. Also the girls’ volleyball team competes in tournament action later today.
