Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul says electrical issues led to two recent car fires. He says one may have been prevented if the owner had paid attention to a recall she had received for her vehicle. “And I think it is important for people to know in case they missed the recall that Hyundai and Kia were recalling half a million vehicles for fire hazards due to electrical in nature.” Saul says a second car fire was also due to an electrical malfunction, but the vehicle wasn’t the subject of a recall and the vehicle was a total loss.

Digital Divide In Virtual Learning

A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says with more kids learning virtual we are finding out just how much of a digital divide we have in the country. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says 50 million kids are currently learning virtually because of the pandemic and 15 to 16 million of them do not have access to broadband. “Not only was there a digital divide, but when they went to school at least they got some of the instruction now you have kids that can’t even walk in the door of the school that are entirely missing the online experience and the online education.” He says some districts have tried to make up for the problem by providing photo copies of lessons for kids, but it is not the same thing. He says broadband access is an increasingly necessary commodity to our homes.
