Timeline For Ripon Street Project

Ripon’s Common Council this week approved two contracts with MSA Professional Services for the Vermont Street and Parkway Terrace improvement projects. One of the contracts was for administrations of a $1 million Community Development Block Grant awarded for the project and the other is for design and construction of the project, which will be done next year. MSA Project Engineer Dan Rammer laid out the probable timeline for the $2.2 million project. He says bidding for the project will be next March with the bid awards the following month and actual construction beginning in May. The project should be completed in September or October of next year.  Low interest loans from the DNR’s Safe Drinking Water Loan Program and Clean Water Fund Program could also help pay for the projects with the possibility of principal forgiveness on the loans.

Oshkosh School District Adds COVID Dashboard To Website

The Oshkosh Area School District has created a COVID-19 Dashboard to keep students, families, staff, and the community up-to-date on the state of the coronavirus in the school district’s boundaries. It is available online at the district’s website. The dashboard provides a snapshot of the number of students and staff who have tested positive for COVID-19, as well as those required to quarantine due to being identified as a close contact. In addition to active cases, the dashboard also provides a listing of total cases since the start of the school year. The dashboard will be updated every Monday and Thursday of the week.

One Person With COVID Can Impact Many Others

Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says an incident involving a friend that attended a wedding is a perfect example of how irresponsible some people have gotten about spreading the coronavirus. “I have a friend that went to a wedding one of the bridesmaids apparently had symptoms for seven days didn’t tell anybody and they did normal wedding things; talking, and drinking, and singing, and eating and the day after the wedding told everybody she had been tested positive.” He says as a result all of those people are now in quarantine. Puhlmann-Becker says she was a bridesmaid, but it was a health emergency and she should have backed out of participating in the wedding.

Vitamin D And COVID 19

Just over four months ago Congressman Glenn Grothman touted two research studies that showed Vitamin D deficiency plays a role in increasing the severity of symptoms and overall mortality rate in COVID-19 patients. Since then he was hoping Dr. Anthony Fauci would shine a little light on that and the federal lawmaker says it upset him a little, but finally Fauci did talk taking Vitamin D himself. Grothman says one of the studies concluded that vitamin D will not prevent an individual from contracting the virus, but having healthy levels of vitamin D may prevent or reduce severe illness, complications or death in those who are infected.

(Waupaca Police photos)

A Waupaca Police officer used waders, a catch pole, and duck skiff to rescue two dogs stuck in a swampy area last Sunday. Initially the call was to help a person that was trying to help the dogs and got stuck in the muck, but was able to get out. The dogs were on the other side of the swamp and river. Officer Sam Van Dinter who responded to the call contacted Officer Wesley Zube who he knew was close by and had the equipment to perform the rescue. Officer Zube crossed the swamp and the river and recovered the dogs. Officer Van Dinter then cleaned them up and transported them to the Waupaca County Humane Society. The owners were located and the two dogs have been returned home safe.

Pork Recipes For National Pork Month

October is National Pork Month and with that in mind Julia Nunes, the 73rd Alice in Diaryland, is sharing recipes that include pork. Nunes admits she’s not much of a cook, but has tried a couple of simple recipes with pork that she has enjoyed. “I’m going to be posting a baby back rib recipe and I also made a meal in a crockpot that was cheesy pork chops and rice and it didn’t look that appetizing, but it was like the perfect comfort food and it was perfect for these cooler days.” Other recipes she’s posted include pork brats, pork tacos, and a pork pot roast. She also notes that ground pork can easily be substituted for any kind of ground meat recipe. Nunes’ recipes are posted at the Alice in Dairyland website.
