Tyrone Taylor homered, Eric Sogard doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and Milwaukee rallied Tuesday night for a 3-2 victory over the surging Cincinnati Reds that bolstered the Brewers’ sagging playoff hopes. The Brewers have reached the playoffs each of the last two seasons with September surges. They’ve won four of five and are back to .500 (27-27) for the eighth time this season. They’ve yet to have a winning record. Cincinnati (28-28) wasted a chance to solidify its playoff standing and move two games over .500 for the first time in three years. The Reds opened the game in position for one of the NL’s wild card spots with the Brewers a game behind.
Taylor had a solo shot off Sonny Gray, who went five innings in a solid return from a hip injury. Milwaukee rallied against Tejay Antone (0-3), who gave up Daniel Vogelbach’s single and Jedd Gyorko’s double to open the seventh. Orlando Arcia tied it with a sacifice fly to deep center, and Sogard doubled down the line in left field for a 3-2 lead, getting the Brewers’ dugout celebrating.
Left-hander Brett Anderson (4-3) allowed four hits in six innings, including Nick Castellanos’ two-run homer. Devin Williams struck out five in two innings, escaping a threat in the eighth. Josh Hader retired the side in order in the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances, emerging from his recent slump.
After the three-game series in Cincinnati, the Brewers finish with five games in four days at St. Louis, including a “home” game as part of a doubleheader Friday. The Reds have a day off Thursday followed by a three-game series in Minnesota.
The two teams finish out their series tonight. Adrian Houser (1-5) goes for the Brewers against Trevor Bauer (4-4). First pitch is at 5:40 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday the Pirates edged the Cubs 3-2 and the Cardinals shut out the Royals 5-0.
The Packers are back on the practice field today getting ready for the Saints game Sunday night in New Orleans. Green Bay has opened the season with wins over Minnesota and Detroit while New Orleans is 1-1 after losing at Las Vegas to the Raiders Monday night. The Packers have several players who are being treated for injuries that occurred Sunday during the Lions game. Receiver Davante Adams left with a hamstring injury, center Corey Linsley had a hand injury and running back/receiver Tyler Ervin suffered a concussion.
In other team news, guard Lane Taylor suffered a season-ending knee injury in the season opener against Minnesota and Tuesday the Packers placed Taylor on the injured reserve list. The Packers have one roster spot open by placing Taylor on IR. Additionally, Green Bay released LB Greg Roberts from the practice squad.

Wisconsin will open at home against Illinois on Oct. 24 and close at Iowa on Dec. 12. Besides the six divisional opponents, the Badgers will play at Michigan (Nov. 14) and at home vs. Indiana (Dec. 5). Game dates are subject to move to other days, such as Fridays, but those will be announced later.
This is the third iteration of the Big Ten schedule. The league issued a shortened season schedule with no non-conference games in August only to pause the season days later.
Several other conferences already began play although there have been a number of games which have had to be postponed or canceled due to COVID-19 issues. The Big Ten has no room for makeup games as teams will play eight straight weeks before heading into its championship week.
Teams will match up during championship week with each West team playing an East team who finish in the same spot in the standings, with the top teams playing for the league title, although the league will try to prevent regular-season rematches.
