Corbin Burnes allowed one hit in seven innings in another outstanding performance, and  the  Milwaukee Brewers slugged their way to their highest run total in over a decade, beating the Detroit Tigers 19-0 on Wednesday.

Jedd Gyorko homered twice, and Jacob NottinghamRyan Braun and Tyrone Taylor also went deep for the Brewers. Milwaukee hit eight doubles in the game, setting a franchise record with 13 extra-base hits.  Burnes (3-0) struck out 11 in his third straight start without an earned run.

It was the most runs for the Brewers since they scored 20 at Pittsburgh on April 22, 2010. Milwaukee, which entered the day 2 1/2 games out of a postseason spot, snapped a three-game losing streak.

Matthew Boyd (1-6) allowed seven runs and eight hits in three-plus innings. He walked four and struck out two.

It was the longest outing of Burnes’ career — he went six innings in each of his previous two starts. The Tigers didn’t manage a baserunner until Willi Castro’s one-out triple in the fifth — and even then, Burnes struck out the next two hitters to keep Detroit off the scoreboard.  Castro added a single in the eighth for the Tigers’ only other hit.

Orlando Arcia and Taylor had four hits each for Milwaukee, and Luis Urias drove in five runs.

The Brewers hit four doubles off Boyd in a three-run second inning. Urias drove in a run with his two-base hit, and Avisail Garcia drove in two with his. Gyorko led off the third with a home run, and Nottingham hit a two-run shot in the fourth. Braun’s RBI single made it 7-0 in the fourth.

The Brewers hit four more doubles in the sixth, scoring five runs in the inning. Christian Yelich’s RBI double made it 8-0, then Urias added a three-run double and scored on a two-base hit by Taylor.

Milwaukee scored three more runs in the seventh, the last two coming on Braun’s home run.

Tigers outfielder Travis Demeritte took the mound to pitch the ninth. He allowed a solo homer by Gyorko, an RBI single by Urias and a two-run homer by Taylor. That was Taylor’s first major league homer.

Milwaukee is off Thursday. The Brewers host the Chicago Cubs on Friday night, with Brandon Woodruff (2-3) taking the mound.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Wednesday, the Reds blanked the Cubs 3-0 and  the White Sox beat the Pirates 8-1.  The Cardinals were off.  Also Wednesday, the Atlanta Braves set a new National League record in runs scored in a single game by clobbering the Miami Marlins 29-8.  Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in game. The Braves Adam Duvall had his second three-homer game in eight days

A day after being eliminated by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Bucks reportedly are interested in exploring a trade for the Oklahoma Thunders Chris Paul.  There is one stumbling block in that Paul is owed $40 million for each of the next two seasons.  Maybe Milwaukee thinks Paul could be the final piece to the puzzle in their quest to win an NBA championship.

Meanwhile,  Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is slated to be a free agent after the 2020-21 season, could hold the league hostage this offseason if he were to decide a new destination is in order.

“It’s not happening. That’s not happening,” Antetokounmpo told Yahoo Sports after the Bucks were eliminated in five games in the second round by the Miami Heat on Tuesday night.

“Some see a wall and go in [another direction]. I plow through it. We just have to get better as a team, individually and get right back at it next season.”

Antetokounmpo, 25, is eligible for a super-max extension this offseason that is expected to be worth around $254 million over five years.

The Packers were back on the practice field on Wednesday in preparation for their season-opener Sunday at Minneapolis against the Minnesota Vikings.  Green Bay swept last year’s series against Minnesota and overall went 6-0 in the Northern Division

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers knows his team needs to get off to a fast start with a win at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“They have always been important,” Rodgers said of games within the division. “The best way to ensure a playoff spot is to dominate your division. We have made the playoffs without winning the division as well, but it is definitely the easiest way to secure a home playoff spot. It’s always been very important. I think the NFC North has always been characterized by a lot of really strong defenses and elite players, especially on that side of the ball.”

Some good news for the Packers offense as the Vikings’ vaunted pass rusher Danielle Hunter was placed on I.R. late Wednesday afternoon.  But while the Packers won’t have to face Hunter, and the Vikings secondary won’t be the same without departed corners Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes, All-Pro safety Harrison Smith remains and Rodgers has a lot of respect for him.

On the injury front in Green Bay, there was pretty good news on Wednesday. Hybrid safety/linebacker Raven Greene was back at practice, as was defensive lineman Montravious Adams.   Offensive lineman Billy Turner and outside linebacker Randy Ramsey remained the only 2 players missing from the workouts.

The NFL regular season opens tonight where the defending Super Bowl Champs, the Kansas City Chiefs, host the Houston Texans.  Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is ready to lead his team to another Super Bowl win.

If high school sports can make it to state tournaments this fall, those tournaments won’t be held in Madison. The WIAA announcing Wednesday that due to the COVID-19 rules in place in Dane County, they will not be able to hold any state tournaments in UW-Madison facilities.

The tournaments affected would be girls golf, girls tennis, and girls swimming and diving. A decision was made in July that if state championship games were played in football, they would not be held at Camp Randall Stadium.  The WIAA says it will announce the locations and sites of culminating events and tournaments when determined and approved by the Board of Control, provided the Tournament Series is conducted as scheduled.
