After an off-day on Thursday, the Milwaukee Brewers are back at Miller Park tonight hosting the Chicago Cubs in a Central Division matchup.  The Brewers are 19-22 while the first place Cubs are 26-19 and lead the second place Cardinals by three games and the Brewers by five.  Lefthander Jon Lester (2-2) starts for Chicago against Milwaukee right-hander Brandon Woodruff (2-3).  First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

 

In the NL Central on Thursday, the Cardinals and Tigers split a doubleheader with St. Louis winning the first game 12-2 and Detroit the nightcap 6-3.   The Cubs beat the Reds 8-5.

The defending Super Bowl Champions opened the season with an impressive win last night.  The Kansas City Chiefs behind quarterback Patrick Mahomes beat the Houston Texans 34-20 at Arrowhead Stadium.  Mahomes threw three touchdown passes and Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 138 yards on 25 carries and one touchdown.  Sammy Watson caught seven passes for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs.  Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson was 20-32 for 253 yards with one touchdown and one interception while David Johnson rushed for 77 yards on 11 carries.

In the NBA Western Conference semifinals on Thursday, the Lakers beat the Rockets 110-100 to take a 3-1 lead in their series.  Tonight the Clippers, who lead 3-1, can wrap up their series against Denver.  In the Eastern Conference semifinals tonight, Boston and Toronto play a deciding game with their series knotted at three games each.

The Packers continue preparations for their season-opener Sunday against Minnesota.  On the injury front Thursday, it was good news for Green Bay as offensive lineman Billy Turner (slated to start at right tackle if healthy) was back at practice in pads, though still limited by a right knee injury. Inside linebacker Oren Burks was back to being a full participant in practice. Only OLB Randy Ramsey missed the workout altogether.  Kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium is at noon and the game can be heard on 102.3, The Bug with the pregame starting at 10:00.

The Green Bay Packers signed DL Daylon Mack and RB Dexter Williams to the practice

squad and released RB Damarea Crockett (duh-mar-ee-ay) and T/G Alex Light. The

transactions were announced Thursday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.

 

Mack (6-1, 336), a second-year player out of Texas A&M, was originally selected by

the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round (No. 160 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. He

appeared in one game for the Ravens in 2019 before being placed on injured reserve

with a knee injury. After being waived by Baltimore on Aug. 1, Mack spent some time

with the Detroit Lions and New York Giants. As a senior in college, he was awarded

the Most Improved Defensive Lineman award at the team’s annual banquet after

starting all 12 games and ranking No. 3 on the team with 5.5 sacks. Mack will wear

No. 79 for the Packers.

Ripon High School Athletic Director Bill Kinziger announced Thursday the Ripon High School fall sports teams including football, boys soccer and volleyball, will play in the Flyway Conference this spring when the alternative fall season begins.  Ripon, Campbellsport and Waupun are all a part of the East Central Conference and will join the Flyway Conference for the alternative fall season.  Other schools in the Flyway Conference include Laconia, Lomira, Mayville, North Fond du Lac,  St. Mary’s Springs and Winnebago Lutheran Academey.  Oakfield, who is part of the Trailways Conference, will join the Flyway for volleyball only.
