Missing Oshkosh Woman Found Safe
A 33-year-old Oshkosh woman reported missing over a week ago has been found safe. Jaclyn Smith was reported missing on August 21st. There was concern because she didn’t have her diabetic medication with her that she needs. Police at the time said she has a history of wandering away and it was thought she might be in the Green Bay area. Police posted a description of her and her photo when she disappeared.
Pedestrian Killed In Columbia County Accident
A 70-year-old Poynette man was struck and killed when a vehicle lost control on Tipperary Road in Columbia County’s Town of Dekorra last Friday afternoon. The man was walking against traffic when a 76-year-old man from Dane lost control of his vehicle in the 25 mile an hour zone. The vehicle went off the road and overcorrected, which caused it to spin and hit the pedestrian. The vehicle then went up a retaining wall and rolled over trapping the driver inside. The pedestrian died at the scene and the driver suffered minor injuries. Speed is a factor in the crash.
Church Scam
Markesan Police are warning residents about a scam in which the scammer poses as a local pastor. Scammers were able to hack into the directory of a local church and are sending out text messages to church members posing as the Pastor. The text claims the Pastor needs members to go out and purchase gift cards of a certain kind to help with a family in need. The Pastor was unaware of the scam until church members called to confirm with him. Police advise verifying any text or email you get from a subject claiming to be your Pastor before giving.
Barlow Park Charter School
Barlow Park Elementary School in Ripon adds a second charter school to its options. In addition to the elementary school and Journey Charter School there is Barlow Park Charter School. Principal Tanya Sanderfoot says it is both competency and play-based for K-2 students. She says the competency-based portion is similar to swimming lessons. “It is kind of like swimming lessons where you would do an assessment and you place those kids in a group that has a similar need and then they get so much more instruction right at their level and ultimately they grow faster because it is all geared and personalized toward them.” She says with play-based instruction kids are able to do a little bit more risk-taking or trying things out in a playful way before actually having to apply it to the real world.
COVID 19 Notification App
There’s now an app available through Apple and Google that can be used for COVID-19 exposure notification. But there are some issues with the app. Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says if you have the app and were exposed to someone who tested positive for the virus you will be notified providing they also have the app. “And if I was then tested positive I could put in my app I tested positive and it would recognize people that I came into contact with in the last 14 days and it would send them a message and say you came into contact with someone that has tested positive you should either quarantine or get tested.” He says the problem is the privacy aspect because although you get the notification or send it out it is so anonymous that you don’t know where you came into contact with a person or who that person is.
Insulin Bill
Congressman Glenn Grothman is hoping to drum up support for a bill that would give relief to diabetics paying for the high cost of insulin. He says there are biosimilar drugs that would accomplish the same thing as insulin, but at a lower cost. “I crafted the bill, but we’ve got some Democrats on board too it is something I would like to think I have a chance to get done yet this year. We are working with several national organizations.” The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says there will be opposition from those who profit on insulin.
