Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur spoke to media on Sunday about how different this training camp will look due to COVID-19 restrictions and protocol.
“Just the whole layout of training camp is unlike anything, it’s unprecedented,” LaFleur explained. “We are trying to make the best decisions possible for our football team and we just have to be fluid.”
No new players were added to the COVID/Reserve list on Sunday. However, tight end Jace Sternberger and kicker Mason Crosby were placed on the list last week. Receiver Devin Funchess remains the only player for Green Bay who has opted out of the season. Gutekunst is optimistic he will be the only Packers player to do so.
Practices will be different in this camp as well. Gutekunst discussed wanting a 90-man split squad. That number has to be cut to 80 before padded practice begin on August 17. The actual practices will also be ramped up since there will be no preseason games.
LaFleur said the staff also discussed ideas of isolating quarterbacks or even having a quarantine quarterback in the roster incase multiple become positive with COVID-19. The second-year head coach was asked about the quarterback controversy between Aaron Rodgers and newly drafted Jordan Love. LaFleur said he’s excited to have Rodgers as his starting quarterback for what he hopes is a long time.
The Packers will have to be accountable this season for what they do outside Lambeau. LaFleur is preaching to his athletes to remain responsible when not inside the building.

The Brewers’ home opener will have to wait until tonght. Friday’s game was postponed and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Sunday. Then on Saturday night, the league announced the postponement of the other two games in the series — a planned doubleheader that was set for Sunday. The Brewers are 3-3 through their first six games. The Crew hosts the White Sox tonight. Two left-handers will square off as the White Sox send Carlos Rodon and the Brewers counter with Brett Anderson. First pitch is at 7:10.
Meanwhile, the Brewers placed outfielder Ryan Braun on the 10-day injured list Sunday with an infected right index finger. The move is retroactive to Thursday.
Braun’s placement on the IL marked the second big hit to Milwaukee’s regular lineup this weekend, as center fielder Lorenzo Cain announced Saturday that he has elected not to play the remainder of the 2020 season. The Brewers have not made corresponding moves to replace either Braun or Cain on the active roster. Braun last played on Wednesday and was 3-for-13 with two RBIs to begin the 2020 campaign.
