FDL Standoff Incident

Fond du Lac Police called out their SWAT team Tuesday morning to assist while they were serving a “high risk” search/arrest warrant in the 100 block of Ellis Street. A 33-year-old man was suspected in a vehicle fire that occurred last weekend, but was also wanted for substantial battery.  The man was believed to be armed and according to police “has an extensive violent criminal history.”  No injuries occurred and the situation ended peacefully.

COVID Concern

An increasing number of COVID-19 cases forced the Fond du Lac County Health Department this week to change the cases metric for its Safe Restart dashboard from yellow to red. The restart program is currently in Phase Two, but that red color means there is cause for concern. Envision Greater Fond du Lac President and CEO Sadie Parafiniuk says they have recommendations on their website for helping businesses to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “You know urging our employers to continue monitoring your employees, encouraging wearing masks when appropriate, washing your hands, urging your employees when they are sick to stay home and to work with them.” She says while that red-colored metric on the dashboard is disconcerting the other four metrics for testing, care, PPE, and contact tracing are all in the green.

Harris Nomination Takes Center Stage At DNC Tonight

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says Joe Biden’s choice of Senator Kamala Harris as a running mate was a strong choice for the Democratic ticket. “With her strong track record in California with the national leadership with the work that she has done in the U.S. Senate she’s showed that she’s prepared to hit the ground running as the next Vice-President of the United States.” Harris will give her acceptance speech tonight at the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee.  She will be followed by Former President Barack Obama.

Ripon School Board Considers Moving Fall Sports To The Spring

The Ripon Area School Board will hold a special meeting today to consider using the WIAA Alternative Spring Schedule for some or all Fall sports. The meeting is at 12:30 this afternoon at the high school.  Due to the concern over the COVID-19 virus and the safety of students the board will consider whether to move a number of sports to the late winter or early spring. For example Football is scheduled to begin the week of September 7th, but if the season is moved to the Spring games would be played between the weeks of March 8th and May 3rd.  Other sports that could be moved include Boys Soccer, Boys and Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Girls Golf and others.

Barlow Park Charter School Opening

The Ripon Area School District’s newest charter school, Barlow Park Charter School, will welcome its first students this September. The school, which is housed within Barlow Park Elementary School, will consist of three kindergarten classrooms, one first grade classroom, and one second grade classroom. The mission of the school is to offer purposeful play-based learning opportunities for K-2 learners. It is competency-based, which means that literacy and math will have learners working in flexible groups based on each individual student’s needs. The opening will coincide with the official opening of new nature playground at Barlow Park Elementary School.
