Baseball’s not back officially but it’s getting closer for the Brewers.

Catcher Omar Narváez and outfielder Avisaíl García were anointed captains for the first — and hopefully only — Blue-Gold World Series, a multigame intrasquad matchup that beganTuesday night at Miller Park. The competition is set to run at least through Friday and will more closely resemble “real” games compared to the controlled scrimmages of recent days, meant to increase the Brewers’ intensity level ahead of a scheduled exhibition at the White Sox on July 22 and Opening Day at the Cubs two days later. It’s not just for the players. Bona fide Major League umpires will call balls and strikes. Brewers broadcasters will call play by play all week on the Brewers.com livestream.

Meanwhile right-handed reliever Cory Knebel is hoping to be back on the opening day roster for this season.  Knebel blew out his pitching elbow in spring training in 2019 and missed the entire season after undergoing Tommy John reconstructive surgery.  The original plan was to begin this season on minor-league rehab assignment, then rejoin the Brewers at the outset of June, but that was before the COVID-19 pandemic blew apart everything, including baseball.  Knebel said  “It felt good to be out there” on Friday after pitching one inning in the Milwaukee Brewers’ situational intrasquad game at Miller Park.  Manager Craig Counsel said if he continues to make progress,  Knebel will make the opening day roster.

The Bucks continue to get ready for the resumption of the 2019-20 season at the Walt Disney World Complex in Orlando.  Milwaukee practiced for the third day in a row on Monday.  Afterwards Giannis Antekoumpo was asked how he likes the practice approach following the five on five workout.  He said it’s been working well and that the team has to get back to working smart and efficient.

Houston Rockets star guard Russell Westbrook announced that he tested positive for the coronavirus before the team departed for Walt Disney World.  Westbrook, co-star James Harden and recent addition Luc Mbah a Moute did not travel with the Rockets to Orlando, Florida.    The NBA announced coronavirus test results Monday. Of 322 players tested since arriving in the Orlando bubble, two were positive and have left the campus to isolate at home or in isolation housing. The league said that since July 1, 19 players have tested positive.  Coach Mike D’Antoni said Sunday he hoped all three of his affected players would be able to arrive at the NBA bubble in Disney World within three or four days. The Rockets had declined to specify a reason for the players’ absence.

The Washington Redskins announced Monday that they will be retiring their nickname and logo after completing a thorough review that began on July 3.

“Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review,” the team said in a statement.  “Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

Sports Business Daily reported that the announcement of a new name has been delayed because trademark issues are pending.
