The COVID-19 fallout is starting to affect collegiate fall sports in Northeast Wisconsin. On Thursday, the Horizon League and Midwest Conference detailed new limitations on fall competition.  In the Division 1-based Horizon League, October 1st will be the jumping off point for any fall competition.

The decision allows each campus to further focus on ensuring return to competition protocols, uphold the Council’s principle of safety and can be reasonably implemented. The delay in competition includes all exhibition, League and non-League contests in all sports (championship and non-championship).

Decisions related to training and practice will be left to members’ discretion. Rescheduling of non-conference contests impacted by the postponed start of the fall seasons will be determined by each school. The Horizon League’s Council will continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19, and will evaluate fall schedules and competitions with the understanding that there may be future changes.   The Council will continue to be guided by our top priority: the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff. The Horizon League Council consists of the 12 member institutions’ athletic directors, chairpersons of the Senior Woman’s Administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives and a student-athlete.”

Brewers General Manager David Stearns held his weekly Zoom Conference on Thursday.  He addressed a number of topics including the status of second baseman Keston Hiura and pitcher Brett Anderson.  Hiura was scratched from Wedensday’s intrasquad lineup because of arm fatigue and Anderson’s start was cut short because of a blister on his pitching hand.  Stearns said both will be given some time off and then their conditions will be re-evaluated.  He also said the team’s 30-man roster should be set by the weekend.

The NCAA says college athletes should be tested for COVID-19 no more than 72 hours before a game, players with high-risk exposures to the coronavirus should be quarantined for 14 days and everybody on the sideline should wear a mask.  The nation’s largest governing body for college sports released its latest guidance to help member schools navigate competition during the pandemic. They come as the prospects of starting a fall season look grim.  Around the country, the number of COVID-19 cases are on the rise and many states have slowed reopenings or reinstated restrictions on some businesses. NCAA President Mark Emmert says if college sports are to be played this fall, “we need to get a much better handle on the pandemic.”

Fifteen women who previously worked for the Washington Redskins‘ organization have alleged sexual harassment and verbal abuse by former scouts and members of owner Daniel Snyder’s inner circle, the Washington Post reported Thursday.  Among those accused of misconduct are former director of pro personnel Alex Santos and former assistant director of pro personnel Richard Mann II, as well as longtime radio play-by-play announcer and senior vice president Larry Michael. All three departed the organization within the past week.  Others named in the report are former president of business operations Dennis Greene and former chief operating officer Mitch Gershman, who, along with Michael, were considered part of Snyder’s “inner circle,” according to the Post.   There are no allegations against Snyder or former longtime general manager Bruce Allen, who was fired at the end of the 2019 season after 10 years with the franchise.
