Former Waupaca Bank President Sentenced
A former bank president from Waupaca was recently ordered to pay almost $1.75 million in restitutions and penalties for a federal crime. Seventy-one-year-old Archie Overby, who was a former chairman of the board for First National Bank of Waupaca, was sentenced last week in federal court in Green Bay after pleading guilty to misapplication of funds. Prosecutors said he spent $1.6 million in bank funds on travel, entertainment and personal expenses for himself, his family and friends from 2010 through 2013. In sentencing Overby, Judge William Griesbach said he believed Overby’s motives were, “greed and callous disregard for others.” Overby was not sentenced to any time in prison due to his age, health issues, and the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
Deadline To File Income Tax Return Looming
Those who put off filing their income tax returns due to the COVID-19 pandemic only have a couple days left to get them in. The deadline for the tax season was extended to July 15th, which is Wednesday. Wisconsin Revenue Secretary Peter Barca says this final week of the extended season will be busy, and their customer service agents are ready to assist filers who have waited until the end to file. The Department’s customer service call center is open weekdays from 7:45 am to 4:30 pm, but will be open Tuesday until 5:45 pm. Those who need assistance should call 608-266-2486. It’s estimated 2.8 million tax filers have already submitted returns out of an expected 3 million.
Chambers Collaborating
Chambers of Commerce in Green Lake and Ripon will be doing more collaborative efforts. Ripon Chamber Executive Director Jason Mansmith says before she was hired as Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director he knew Lisa Beck from her days with Discover Wisconsin and in particular on a piece that was done on the Mascoutin Valley Craft Beverage Trail. Plus she’s originally from Berlin. He says they will have some collaborative efforts including a current project. “One of those efforts is working with Green Lake Greenways to bring some more information and insights about the new trail that’s on Highway 23 moving between Green Lake and Ripon on the biking side of things so we will be working with them and then a couple of other events a little later in the year.”
Ignite FDL County
The Director of Small Business and Entrepreneurship for Envision Greater Fond du Lac says they have been reevaluating the program she oversees. Sarah Spang says it’s known as Ignite Fond du Lac County, but that description might be a little misleading because they help businesses across the county and even those that might have a connection to business in the county. “We’re really looking at what Ignite is possibly even changing the name because the tagline is Ignite Fond du Lac County and we might be looking to change that a little bit.” Spang says the program is for anyone with ideas about entrepreneurship or businesses that need help with expansion, relocation or other issues. To contact Spang, phone the Envision offices at 920-921-9500.

New Lights On At The Ripon Public Library
The Ripon Public Library used some of its time when it was shut down due to Safer at Home orders to make some improvements. Notably Moderow Electric replaced all of the library’s existing lighting with LED equivalents. The conversion is expected to reduce the library’s energy consumption and save the library an estimated nearly $4,000 a year. Meanwhile at the beginning of the month the library discontinued its policy of requiring people to make appointments to browse. They now allow up to 25 people at a time in the library, but there are still restrictions and recommendations in place which are listed at the library’s website.
