Ripon Common Council Preview
The Ripon Common Council tonight will consider a resolution to discontinue and vacate Akin Street. The item was previously tabled. The Council will also be asked to approve an ordinance that would allow the Village of St. Cloud and Town of Fond du Lac to join the Lakeside Municipal Court. The city is already part of that court. The Council will also discuss the possibility of allowing residents to keep chickens in their backyards. It’s an issue the Council discussed several times over the past decade. The Council meets at 7 pm at the Ripon City Hall Council Chambers.

Hot Weather Tips
Wisconsin Emergency Management officials are asking residents to keep a few tips in mind during hot days. On an 80-degree Fahrenheit day, temperatures in a vehicle parked in direct sunlight can climb almost 20 degrees in 10 minutes. Never leave a child or pet inside a parked car. Leaving a window cracked is not enough. Other tips for extreme heat days include staying cool inside an air-conditioned building if possible during the hottest part of the day. Watch for signs of heat-related illnesses, such as weakness, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps. Stay hydrated preferably drinking plenty of water. Also watch for extreme heat alerts. Last year in Wisconsin 5 people died from heat-related illnesses.
Face Mask Still Best Way To Prevent COVID Spread
A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says some businesses have done a wonderful job of trying to prevent the spread of the pandemic. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says hiring a professional cleaning crew to disinfect and sanitize your business once a week is a good step, but asks what about after people return to work after the weekend. He says the virus is primarily spread through respiratory mists so face masks are still the best way to prevent it. “The Task Force is really thinking hard about how we can encourage that to be the norm in this community. In some stores it is very much the norm, you go into Webster’s and you see a whole lot of people wearing masks and you see a lot of effort that Candie and her team have put into that store in making it a safe experience as possible for people there.” Puhlmann-Becker says in cultures where people normally wear a face mask the virus has hardly made a dent.
FVWDB Can Help The Unemployed
The Chief Executive Officer of the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board says a good portion of those who lost their jobs because of restrictions imposed during the pandemic won’t be getting them back. Anthony Snyder says economists estimate that about 40 percent are now permanently unemployed. “They may have been laid off in March thinking they were going to go back, but either their job has been eliminated or their employer closed and so in our 6-county areas we believe we are looking at 8,000 total unemployed people.” Snyder says there are still good paying jobs out there, but it may require some retraining for laid off workers. They will do an assessment of a person’s skills and have funding available to help with retraining expenses. What they need is for people to reach out to them by visiting their website foxvalleyjobcenter.com or by calling their Menasha Office at (920) 997-3272. The Fox Valley Workforce Development Board serves Calumet, Green Lake, Fond du Lac, Waupaca, Waushara, and Winnebago counties.
Work Begins On Approaches To Puchyan River Bridge In Green Lake County
State Department of Transportation officials tell us milling and overlay work will begin today in Green Lake County on the approaches for the Puchyan River Bridge. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in either direction, with flaggers stopping traffic so trucks can enter and exit. The traffic signals at the intersection of State Highway 23, State Highway 49, and County Highway A will be set to flashing red thereby creating a four-way stop while work is occurring. Drivers should use caution and remain alert while going through any work zone.
Ripon Senior Center Making Most Of Off Site Opportunities
The Ripon Senior Activity Center is doing some activities off-site while the center is closed due to the pandemic. Center Executive Director Noreen Johnson says they’ve been using an area by the pavilion in Murray Park for an exercise class when weather allows. “Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:15 we are over there. So we have the light weight weights and exercise bands and the balls, and we set up some folding chairs out there and a couple people use the picnic table.” They also hope to stage a picnic at the Murray Park Pavilion on Friday, July 10th. Johnson notes Senior Centers across Wisconsin have had different responses to COVID-19 with some closed through the summer, while others are partially or are fully open.
