It was exactly 15 years to the day that the Packers selected Aaron Rodgers, hoping he would be the successor to future Hall of Famer Brett Favre. Thursday night, the Packers drafted Jordan Love, hoping he will be the successor to Aaron Rodgers.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst thought so highly of the Utah State quarterback he traded up four spots from number 30 in the first round to 26th get him. The Packers switched picks with the Miami Dolphins and also gave up their fourth-round pick, 136th overall.
Love finished his 3-year career with 60 touchdowns and 29 picks, but 17 of those came last year. He also had 9 rushing scores, 7 two years ago.
Love said he said he was very excited to be in Green Bay and looks forward to learning the position from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers is still under contract for four more years and plans to play all of them at least.
It was the fourth first-round trade for Gutekunst in 3 years, but this was by far the biggest. “I know a lot of people will look at this as an odd move for the immediate and I understand that, but there’s the balance of the immediate and the long-term,” Gutekunst said late Thursday night. “That’s something I have to consider and that’s why I did it.”
Love becomes the first skill player selected by the Packers in the first round since… Aaron Rodgers.
In rounds two and three today, the Packers have the 62nd and 94th pick. On Saturday, Green Bay has one pick in round five, three in round six and two picks in round seven.
The number one overall pick in the draft was as expected, Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow from LSU, who was taken by Cincinnati. Ohio State defensive end Chase Young was the second pick and taken by Washington and cornerback Jeff Okudah, also from Ohio State, was taken third by Detroit.

Oshkosh West has named Duane Hartkopf as its interim head football coach for the 2020.
Hartkopf, who was an assistant coach the past five seasons at West, replaces Ken Levine, who stepped down in March after 17 seasons.
The decision to transition to an interim head coach for the upcoming season was made after review of the current and unprecedented situation facing schools and society due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This isn’t Hartkopf’s first head-coaching job at West as he has served as the school’s wrestling coach since the 2014-2015 season, and he will continue in the role as well. Under his leadership, the wrestling program has seen an increase in participation and has grown into a conference and state contender — with numerous state qualifiers and state place winners.
