Second Death At Senior Living Facility In Sheboygan County

Sheboygan County Sunday reported its second death due to the COVID-19 outbreak, both occurring at the Sunny Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Sheboygan and both people were over the age of 60. The Wisconsin National Guard dispatched a team to the senior living facility to set up a mobile testing site and perform specimen collection. County Health officials say the National Guard would help with manpower and decontamination as workers and residents of the home are tested.

COVID 19 At State Prisons

The state’s Department of Corrections says there are multiple confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state’s prisons including two at Oshkosh Correctional. The DOC lists cases by whether the person is a staff member that tested positive for the virus or in the department’s care. Oshkosh Correctional lists two persons in the department’s care as having the virus and no staff members. Waupun Correctional has one staff member with it and two staff members and two people in the department’s care at Columbia Correctional. Four people in the department’s care have tested positive, 47 negative, and 27 tests are still pending.

Extra Help At The Polls

Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel says it is going to be a tough election for county and municipal clerks and poll workers. Many are voting by absentee ballot, but Buechel says they’ve enlisted some county employees and the National Guard to help at the polling locations that are open. “We are getting poll workers I have I believe close to 15 county employees that are working the polls. We are paying them as work days just so we can fill the slot plus the National Guard came in here to help out as well.” Buechel says those employees and National Guard members did get the training they need to work the polls.

Spring Ballot

Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg says there is plenty to vote on in today’s election. “There’s a referendum on the backside of your ballot that is on Marsy’s Law. We have justice of the Supreme Court. In this part of the state we have the District 2 Appeals Court judge and there are two names on the ballot for that.” In addition there are county board, school board, city, town and village seats at stake. Ripon has a Mayor’s race and two candidates and two write-ins running for three seats on the School Board. In Green Lake County there is also a school referendum to vote on.

CSI COVID 19 Resource Website

Comprehensive Service Integration of Fond du Lac County has created a website that contains a list of local and national resources for individuals who are struggling with the COVID-19 outbreak. It also includes basic tips on how to cope and help others and links to other sources on the topic. Tammi Kohlman is the coordinator of CSI’s Destination Zero Suicide Prevention Initiative. She says they’ve seen an increasing number of mental health-related crisis calls and suicides in the county in recent weeks.

Homework Helpline Available In Ripon

Ripon Schools students stuck at home during the COVID-19 outbreak can get help with their homework through the Homework Helpline. The BRAVE program has teamed up with the Education Department at Ripon College to offer homework help for students PreK-through 12. The service is available Sunday through Thursday afternoons and evenings. To access it go to the district’s website and scroll down on the homepage until you see the Homework Helpline button. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says funding from the BRAVE program is helping make it possible. She says it’s also a nice partnership with Ripon College using teacher candidates who are clinicians who are picking up evening hours to help out families.
