OSHKOSH — The Oshkosh Area Community Band will present its spring concert, “A Tribute to Our Founding Director,” Saturday, March 21. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Alberta Kimball Auditorium, Oshkosh West High School, 375 North Eagle St.
The Dixieland Band will perform before the concert starting at 6:45 p.m.
Admission to the concert is free. Donations will be accepted at the door.
Terry Hathaway was the founding director of the band which played its first concert in 1987. He stepped down from his directing duties in 2018 and was named director emeritus. He will be featured in a variety of roles at the concert.
“Above and Beyond,” composed by Robert Buckley, will be given its world premiere at this concert. This piece was commissioned by the band upon Hathaway’s retirement. The title reflects the band’s feelings that Hathaway went “above and beyond” what he needed to do to get the band established and sustained for more than 30 years.
“It is a fitting tribute that will live on in the music that will hopefully be performed for many years to come,” said R. David Berndt, director of the band.
The concert also will include a variety of light classics, marches and popular tunes. Among the highlights are “Chorale and Alleluia,” by Howard Hanson; “March Grandioso,” by Roland Seitz; and “Twentiana,” a medley of popular tunes from 100 years ago. Jazz Ensemble will play jazz favorites such as the “Moon River” chart of Count Basie.
Hathaway will join the band as a narrator as he tells the story of a French horn player and his woes in “The Peck-Horn’s Revenge.” The audience will have a chance to serenade Hathaway by adding vocals to “On, Wisconsin.”
Jon Basten is director of the Dixieland Band and Jazz Ensemble.
