Census Scams
The 2020 Census may be a prime opportunity for scammers, but knowing a few pieces of information can protect you from them. Lara Sutherlin is the Administrator for the state’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection. She says those who don’t fill out the census online or through the mail will get a visit from a census worker. She says a real census worker will have the proper ID. “The way you know it is a census worker is they will have an ID and the ID will have a number on it and they will also have a badge and they will have a brief case that has ‘census worker.’” She points out you can call the ID number in to 1-800-923-8282 to verify whether the person is a census worker. She says if they ask you about your social security number, political affiliation, finance information or citizenship they are not a census worker. She also warns if you are interested in being a census worker the only way to apply is on the 2020census.gov website.
