COVID 19 Safer At Home Enforcement
Markesan Police Chief Will Pflum says it is important for people to follow the Governor’s Safer at Home order, but police aren’t enforcing it like Martial Law. He says quite a few law enforcement agencies posted as much on social media when the order went into effect last week. “Cross the state you’ve been seeing law enforcement try to reach out their communities and saying that’s not what this is about and that’s not how we are enforcing this act.” In particular people were concerned about the non-essential travel definition of the order. But for the purpose of enforcement keeping public gatherings to fewer than 10 people is important for the social distancing component of the order. Pflum says they just want people to understand it and do what is right.

Motion To Modify Bail For Attempted Murder Suspect Denied
A motion to modify bail has been denied for a 45-year-old Fond du Lac man who allegedly tried to beat a neighboring apartment dweller to death with a pole last May. Fond du Lac County Judge Dale English denied the motion last Friday for Cyrus Elworth. Elworth is facing attempted murder charges. The neighbor initially called police when Elworth took items from his apartment. According to the criminal complaint months later when the victim was leaving his apartment Elworth hit him with a wooden pole in the back of the head and continued to strike him with it. The victim managed to escape. Elworth is being held in the County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond with a three-day jury trial scheduled in June.
Historic Mapes Hotel Will Be Nice Addition For Downtown Ripon
Ripon Downtown Manager Craig Tebon says it will be nice to have the “Historic Mapes Hotel” up and running on Watson Street. It is one of the oldest standing buildings in the downtown built in the 1850’s by David Mapes for his son Timothy Mapes. In the early 1990’s it was the Davis Hotel. He notes they were shooting for a mid-May opening. Tebon says the latest version of the historic structure will be a plus for the downtown. “You know it is going to be a really nice addition to the downtown. There’s 11 units in the building. It will be like an Airbnb type of thing, but it is going to be a nice addition.” He says at one time around the 1870’s a fourth floor was added with a cupola, but a fire in the early 1900’s at the Opera House, what is now the American House, lept across the street and destroyed the fourth floor.
